38925, Who’s taken apart their rack and pinion??
Posted by JustOne, Dec-05-02 01:24 PM
I’m trying to figure out if you can take out the inner tie rod w/o having to take the entire assembly out?

Has anyone ever had to take out the tie rod (not the ends the shaft that goes into the assembly w/ the boot over it)? How hard was it? looks like a bitch.

TIA
Brian

I think that there is an attachment for a socket that makes it a lot easier. I know that the Mitsu Techs don't need to take the whole assembly off and apart and I have seen them use a special attachment on an impact gun.

Edit: Sorry, looks like I brought back an old post. Question still applies if anyone knows.

I'm trying to take off the inner tie rods also. Before I take off that boot I want to know what I'm getting into. I couldn't find anything about it in the service manuals I have. Is there a service manual that covers the steering system?

Wow, super old post.

You can take them off w/o taking the entire assembly apart. Once you take the boot off all you have to do is unscrew the tie rod. There is a ball joint and behind that is a place you can get a wrench onto. It is actually quite easy.
