38868, CEL Code help!!! Posted by FnNitWit81, Dec-04-02 01:26 PM
Ok guys, I finally got around to check out why i have a check engine light on. I can up with these codes, 11, 31, 55.
11 = not a problem at all 31 = I am really confused...
I checked visiually if I could see anything wrong with my evap canister, but I don't know how to check if it is clogged, and also i don't have a map of the vacum lines on a 97, If anyone can help me this would be great.....

I'm getting the same code right now. I've checked the line from the intake to the purge valve and that was clear. The canister seemed clear - I just blew threw each of the holes to check if it was clogged.
I did a search on this forum for "31 CEL" with the "and flag" checked and also had the "search the archives" flag checked. It came up with a few posts on it, but nothing conclusive on how to fix it. Evidently this code is somewhat common - and clearing it seemed elusive for some folks. Besides the normal culprits(EVAP purge solenoid, leaky gas tank cap, clogged lines/canister) supposedly the rollover valve on top of the gas tank could also cause this problem.
<rant> It seems like alot of people just live with this particular CEL code. To me that is an unnacceptable solution. I will not live with a CEL, cause how do you know if you get another CEL without doin the keydance. So that doesn't help much because when you get a CEL, it should just pop up in your face when it happens. If you really think about it, isn't that why they put the CEL in the gauge panel in the first place? I will NOT live with one. IMO - the CEL MUST be clear to tell me what is happening WHEN it happens...not when I happen to check the codes again. </rant>
Is there any way to fool the computer into thinking the EVAP system is working? I didn't see any posts that even came close to asking or answering that question. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass whether the EVAP system is working or not, but you can see by my rant that I need the CEL to clear up. If it's easy enough just to fool the computer, then I'd rather do that than keep tracing down and suckin on gas fume lines to see if the're clogged. What signal is being sent to the computer from the EVAP purge solenoid? Is it a particular voltage(12v, 5v, 1v)? Is there a resistor I can use to tirck the ECU?

WOW, I nice post...
Um...I'm with you on this one "I HAVE TO GET THE LIGHT OFF". I need to know when my car screws up I need that light off. I'm going to check more this weekend for a leak. I wish i could find a vacum line chart, does anyone have one for a 97 GS?? that could come in handy.
Has anyone on this board fixed the issue? What did you find?
let us know.....

I guess I don't right now. This another thing thats common with this code is that it goes away as mysteriously as it comes. Here are some of the home remedys that I found in the archive search: 1)Wait long enough, it'll eventually go away. 2)Keep your gas tank full cause it only happens when you get to 1/4 tank 3)Drive down a gravel road 4)Switch to a higer octane
There were others, but those are the ones that stuck in my mind. I guess I experienced home remedy #1 cause mine just went away last night. I tried filling the tank, that didn't work. I cruised the shopping parking lot for speedbumps(simulated gravel road) and that didn't work. I already run 93 so thats not the problem. Actually it may be an entirely new home remedy, because I did have the ECU unplugged for several hours while I was installing my Field SFC Hyper-R after which, the CEL hasn't come back. Hmmm. Sounds like another home remedy to me.
5)Unplug your ECU overnight and hook it back up in the morining.

I went to AutoZone and the guy let me use there scan tool. Theres is cool it read all kinds'o shit. Anyways after about 20min playing with it reading different shit the guy came out and took my fun away. The code I came up with was "EVAP Emissions COntrol System Leak (large). Any help guys would be good. The guy at the store said it has to be the gas cap. I heard of that before but, if that was infact the case wouldn't it happen to ALOT of DSM's....I've checked the canister it LOOKS fine.
Thanks, Ronnie 97 GS
