38844, Cheap OBDII Cable?
Posted by Corbin, Dec-04-02 12:48 PM
I found an old post about the unlicensed datalogger software on the RRE site. But, if I were to use that software, where would I get a cable/adapter. Does anyone sell these cable/adapters for cheap? I used to have the obd-2.com datalogger until it was stolen. I hate to rebuy the exact same thing I already had, so I'm wondering if I have any good alternatives. Can you use this RRE software with any cable/adapter?

do you have any pics of it? I have an auto x-ray code reader, etc. it has different cables and all. There are also others out there with several cables. any pics of the connectors?

corbin i use the obd-2.com datalogger like you did with the RRE software.. i heard making the cable is sorta not to hard to make if you know which thing sticks out on the plug which goes to the ecu plug and the other end?

Corbin, if you still have the license code Alex sent you when you purchased the software, you can still use the software. I can get you a pinout on the cable if you'd like to build your own.

The only problem is the cable has a circuit in the DB9 connector. I bought the kit that you have to solder yourself, so I saw the guts. So, I would need detailed photos of the circuit to duplicate it. Not sure if there is any copyright on that circuit...so I was avoiding that route. Know of any sites with plans for a cable?

if anybody can provide the neccessary schematic's for this i would be willing to help out. i have alot of electronic assembly experience and all of the tools. Another thing to consider is the fact that i live in the silicon valley, mecca of electronics, so no problem finding parts around here. Being that im unemployed and have alot of time on my hands, i could assemble a few of these cables and send em' out to you folks for not much more than parts/shipping cost. all i would need for a complete datalogger is this cable, and a palm or laptop, and the software correct? i'd rather take the time to make those cables for a half dozen of us instead of ordering my own complete datalogger setup online and waiting for it arrive.

The stabdard ISO cable is basically straight through. i've taken mine apart, no circuit.

So Dino, if your cable/adapter is straight through then I have no problem copying it. Can you disassemble it and let us know how it all goes together.

And 510, can you try to find an OBDII connector? I've searched through Newark and Digi-key, but found nothing. I'll be your beta-tester if you pull this off. I'd really like to see this come together.

As would I. If you could figure out a way to make that cable, then that would be a great resource.

I'll have to do it this weekend. My cable is not with me, it's at ARD. I'll post the results when i'm done.

Different companies use different cables depending on how the hardware is designed. I assure you that you cannot hook a serial port "straight through" to an OBDII port.

I'd also be careful what you say on a public forum. I know this thread started talking about free software from RRE. I've heard about this too, but I have never been able to find it either. But now people are talking about copying cable designs. Though not said directly, it's pretty obvious that the intent would be to also copy someone else non-free software. We have already prosecuted one person for copyright infringement. The outcome wasn't pretty. Copyright violations are felony charges. If the loggers are so valuable, why not pay the relatively cheap price and obtain a legal copy instead of screwing over the person that worked hard to provide the product.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone (or even anyone) here had evil intentions. Just be cautious what you say. I, for one, don't take piracy of our products lightly.

I use a cable from obd-2.com It was under $100 for students. There is a serial timing circuit in the red adapter part. The rest of the cable is just a regular cat-5 ethernet patch cable, with a regular db9-rj45 adapter on the other end.

I also use the software from RRE. Here's the link:
www.roadraceengineering.com/obd/obdtool.zip

This is not illegal software but UNSUPPORTED software. If you bother RRE about it in any way they will be annoyed and take it off their site. The company that made it went out of business so there is no support on the product whatsoever. Ask here if you have questions, I'll probably be able to help you.

I understand this. From my understanding, and what i have seen in my dismatled OBD-2.com cable (dang thing fell apart - should have bought a pocketlogger ;-)), the OBD-2.com software must do the actual protocol conversion to talk to the OBD2 system. I can find no evidence of a circuit within the cable itself. Once i sit down with it and a multimeter, i will actually be able to verify this, or i will not. I have not honestly tried.

The only reason this discussion came up was due to the theft of Corbin's laptop, cable, and software by a car thief (or car thieves). He has purchased a valid license for both the software and cable. Put your mind at ease, we're not looking to rip off any hard working developer or company.

IANAL, but as far as my understanding of copyright law goes, Corbin building a new cable from scratch to replace his stolen item is not illegal. I may be wrong, depending on the terms of the agreement entered into between OBD-2's Alex Pepper and the purchaser of the license. Admittedly, my post should have read "I will PM you the results" - as making it public is surely a violation of the DMCA, as well as a disservice to OBD-2.com.

Glad to hear that. I don't know how my reply is going to sound on your end, i just felt i had to explain on behalf of my Forum that we have the best *legal* intentions in this. You have nothing to worry about from us, if it makes you feel any better. i do not allow illegal activities to take place on my site, and had this discussion turned to piracy or theft of IP, it would have been locked and removed.

Mind you, that Corbin has already paid for the software.

Corbin, I've actually misplaced my licensing number before and emailed Alex Peper about it, and he re-sent me the number.

I don't see ANY sort of copyrights on the use of the cable. So, if you have the legal right to use the software, there shoudn't be any type of infringment on merely building the cable.

Sorry, I should have said that...actually I did type it, but I erased it before I posted. I agree that there is nothing wrong with obtaining a cable for software that he has the key for. (Does AP not sell the cables by themselves?) The post was towards other people in the thread that didnt have software or whose intent was to distribute cables.

I know we have a "reverse engineer" clause in our EULA the prohibits and reverse engineering of the circuit or software. Our circuit itself is copyrighted as well. Duplicating it would be a violation of the copyright and the EULA.

I know IP rights is a touchy subject...especially with me being on the 'other' end. It's weird how your view changes when you've experienced the other end of the piracy issue..I spend more on software this past year than I have all my life...

Anyway, stolen cables is a problem. We use the fact that you have a cable in your posession as part of our copy protection since the reg code isn't 100% secure. That being the case, we do not sell the cable seperately from the software. We've already had people claim their cable was lost/stolen/thrown out when in reality they just want to get another to give to their buddy. It sucks that the actions of a few have to ruin it for people that actually did have their cables stolen.

Although reverse engineering is not allowed in your clause there's no reason corbin nor anyone else build a serial interface from the SAE standards already posted on the web. These are open standards as are the interface designs, pinouts and signalling.

Is a good starting point.

Knowledge is a powerful thing.. unfortunately the DMCA is killing the US marketplace and innovation.. Makes me proud to be Canadian ;-)

yeah my basic assumption was that there would be nothing wrong with me using my own choice of wires, my own choice of connectors/sockets, my own choice of solder, my own choice of etc etc. i didnt think anything was wrong with me creating my own means of tapping into the ecu and connecting to a palm to use free data logging software. but with with the "clause's" reguarding reverse engineering and specifics such as a neccessary circuit that can only be used by the company who owns copyright etc etc... i guess it gets a little more tricky than "there's more than one kid of katchup"
but this shit probably wasnt worth my time/effort in the first place so oh well.

I have no interest in copying a circuit that someone else designed and sold. I don't think that is appropriate (copyright or not). BUT, if that cable is straight through and there is no circuit, then I see no issue with copying it. If it just connects one pin to another, then I don't see anything copyright.

So, I have no plans to reverse-engineer any hardware and I don't think it is appropriate for anyone else to either. I certainly did not intend to give that impression.

According to Alex There is a chip, or circut in there somewhere. When I had a non functioning datalogger due to the bum serial port on the laptop, he told me to be careful not to break the chip in the cable. Corbin I would call Alex or send him an e-mail and see what he can do for you. He may sell you just the cable put together kit like you did before for cheaper. I'm sure you could make it yourself since your a brilliant person I just don't know what circut or chip you would use.

i got a guy a digram and he found all the parts and said it'd cost about as much in parts to make the cable as to just buy a cable that came with software. I was bummed when i found out.
