38829, Damn tranny Posted by Nitrous_RS1997, Dec-04-02 09:29 AM
Sitting in traffic today, push in clutch, put car in 1st gear, let out on clutch and....nothing. all i hear is the engine revving. so, i think maybe i didnt get it in gear good enough. take it out of first, put it back in, and nothing again. i try 2nd gear, same thing. 3rd, same thing. so im thinking, shit, tranny bug finally caught up to me. thing is, it made NO sound to warn me, and it had been fine all day long up until then. no acting up or weird clutch feel to tip off anything. clutch pedal pressure is normal, it goes into every gear normally, you can look in the engine bay and see it going into the different gears. its like the clutch just isnt engaging at all. at its a almost brand new CM stage 4(800 miles on it). and it was not abused, cause ive been breaking in the new motor at the same time. me and Dino talked, and he mentioned it might be the shiftfork. dont think its the clutch, cause it doesnt rattle when its revved up in gear. you guys have any other ideas or anyone else had this happen to em? thanks guys.

It happened like that to me before. I was thinkin it was my tranny too. but i found out i was low on oil somehow and the light didnt even pop up to tell me.. but when i oil changed the next day. I only had like 2 qts left. So ever since i changed the oil and checked on it more often. It never happened again. Hope that helps you.

Being low on engine oil caused your clutch to not engage?

Sounds like linkage or shift fork. My bet is on Dino's response. I have no idea how engine oil level could affect clutch engagemnet.

I think that it could be an internal clutch problem, like a spring that broke in the pressure plate. I don't see how a busted clutch fork would do that, maybe I am wrong. It could also be a hydraulic issue, maybe from a maladjusted clutch pedal. Pump up is a known problem in the 2G-T if the clutch pedal is not adjusted properly. Let me find a link. Alright, here it is.
http://www.roadraceengineering.com/clutchandflywheeltech.htm
But I will take the part that matters...
<Quote> 2G Pedal "Pump Up" If you are fighting an inconsistent pedal adjustment in a 2G, adjust the upper pedal stop adjuster so that you gain additional free play at the top of the pedal travel. If this is your problem, you will notice that the pedal suddenly gets very tight and the release point will suddenly move up a lot, this is the cause.
2Gs need free play at the top of the pedal travel. If it is close to no travel and right on the edge, then it pumps up. Only 2Gs have a relief valve in the master cylinder that needs to be uncovered so fluid can go back into the reservoir on the clutch release. If not, it gets tighter and tighter and tighter. Then it may slowly relieve the pressure and it is back to normal. Just a 2G thing. You need more free play at the top of the pedal travel.
Left unchecked, the pedal will pump up more and more. The clutch will begin to slip since it is as if you are driving around with your foot on the clutch pedal. Also it plays hell on the crankshaft thrust bearings. The constant pressure pushes the clutch release bearing onto the clutch and flywheel. When centrifugal force throws the clutch release fingers outwards, they make additional pressure on the thrust bearings of the crank. This is an additional factor in short lived crankshaft release bearings and an additional potential cause for crankwalk.
</Quote>
Check your adjustment... And if that is fine, then check the clutch fork. Remove the bolts that hold the slave cylinder in place, move the slave cylinder away from the fork, and remove the boot around the fork. Look in with a flashlight and see what you can see. If that is fine, then I am sorry to report that you probably broke a sping loose. Can't be too expensive, though... Just time consuming! -=B-=

It sounds like a fork to me too. When my laser tranny went out I shifted from 1 into 2 fine did not hear a thing went to go into 3rd it was not there same with 4th. I still had 1,2,5 and R but it was as if 3 and 4 just disapered.

Exactly why I'm saying its not a shift fork. Cause when a shift fork goes bad(we have three - 1-2, 3-4, 5-R) then you will not be able to engage the syncros on that fork.

I don't think its a shift fork problem. If you can "get it into" gear then the shift forks are working, cause the actual feel of getting into gear happens when the (working)fork moves a syncro over a ball detent inside the tranny. Also, there are 3 forks - I can't see how they all went at once.
It doesn't sound like the clutch to me unless somehow the pressure plate is stuck in the disengaged position. But that doesn't seem likely to me either, being a new clutch and all.
Maybe your diff pin slipped out. They're notorious for doing so. Did you have your pin welded or bracketed in? Usually it falls out at speed and creates a spectacular grenade effect to the housing. Maybe you were lucky enough to have it fall out when you pulled up to the light. I would at least take a look at the differential if it's not the pressure plate(or something blatently obvious like a sheard input shaft).

hmm did not even think about the fact he lost all gears your right probably not a fork. Diff pin is very likely too when mine whet all I heared was what sounded like a few small rocks hit the ground and that was all.

Could it be an axle??? Sorry to hear about that buddy :(

I had my diff pin slip out. Had the "Grenade Effect". The smaller pin slipped out causing the larger pin to slip out. This happend spinning fairly fast (clutch fully engaged in 1st gear) at probably about 3500rpms busting the case out all the way around and making a hell of a noise.. Lots of shit on the ground. Tranny fluid everywhere. I would think that could be a fairly large problem if say I was going down the highway going like 85 with the tranny fully engaged (ofcourse) and the fuckin thing slipped... It'd probably shoot out like a bullet through the car and seriously fuck some shit up. Anyways.. Its probably not that. You would probably know. Even if it slipped out theres not much space in the case. It would be banging or atleast ticking up to the case. If I remember when I fixed mine, there wasnt actually enough room for it to completely slip out, unless it busted out the case, and then slipped out. I could be wrong, but thats what I seem to remember.
