38557, Crank sprocket installation / timing belt question
Posted by thedawg, Dec-01-02 05:34 PM
Ok, since it took a blowtorch, welder, 2 destroyed nuts, and an impact wrench to get the crank sprocket OFF, I assumed it would be as hard to get it back on. Heated it in the oven, put some oil on the crank, got a bigass hammer, and slammed it on. Smart, huh?

That worked too well.

The sprocket hit the oil pump on the first whack. My question is, since they're both precision machined parts, is it ok to leave just a hair gap between the oilpump housing and timing belt sprocket?

Oilpump to sprocket clearance is now .002
Crankshaft endplay is specified at .09-.24

Do I need to pull it off and start over? Or will the sprocket just grind itself a little hole (.08+ deep apparently) in the oilpump and live happily ever after? The crank seems to be machined in such a way that it will stop the sprocket, but I don't know how accurate that will be. I really don't want to pull it off. Don't have a welder, blowtorch, or impact wrench handy to do it again...

Thanks guys...

Pull it back out a tad, had same trouble removing crank sprocket got a 3" pully with the 3 bolts and and some wd40, and slipped rite off

dan,
i just jammed it in all the way. i think there is a ridge on the crank so it does not allow the pulley to go on any farther. but if you are not within tolerances then i think you should pull it a little to come within specs. did you swap the bedplate? how were things, does the crank spin nicely now?

Yeah I see the ridge that holds it back but I think the Melling oil pump may have changed the clearance a little. *sigh* I guess the smart thing would be to just pull it back out.

The other bedplate is on now, I just re-used the bearings. Inspected them when I pulled it off and there was a visible mark on the end of the bearing, but no "dent" of any kind. They were still perfectly flat. After looking at the wear marks on the old bearings from 2 diff. motors, I think it will be fine. Just need to get this crank sprocket right, install the UDP and timing belt, and I'm done.
