Title pretty much says it. I'm probably an idiot for assuming one block would mate up to another's bedplate... but so you know, they won't.

I mean, it fit fine, and I even plastigauged and checked all the clearances. Everything was perfectly in spec VERTICALLY. Unfortunately the horizontal line bore for the crank was off by a hair. Since the bearings split there, they installed fine. But when I torqued the crankshaft in there, all of a sudden um.... yeah, it won't turn anymore. The bearing corners just smooshed into the crank and seized it. Props to jamesman for figuring it out

Wish me luck, cause I'm going to try and re-use the bearings unless you guys talk me out of it???

Or... does anyone know where to get a set of clevite main bearings for a '99 quickly and cheaply? I heard they were on backorder at Howell. I really want to get the motor rebuilt this weekend.

Man, I think you shoudl go with new bearings Dan. Atleast the stock mitsu bearings.

I'd have to say you did something wrong. The block and bedplate are cast and should be identical. I swapped my bedplate and crank and it works fines. Ofcoarse, I had the entire assembly align bored before I put it all together.

Did you torque the main caps/bedplate correctly in the designated pattern?

Did you use lithium grease on the rod bearings?


Order the Crevite bearings direct. Ofcoarse because of Thanksgiving you won't get them until next week. :( Sorry about your luck man.

yah, get the stock bearings if you dont got time for the 77 bearings.. u can go to the dealer friday and bame.. you should be done by the weekend if your good.. hehe

Definitly go with new bearings! Don't reuse the ones that are in there now.

OK. I just bought a complete set of factory bearings for my new rebuild. It went like this:

rod bearings- list $5.45 my cost $4.14 you'll need 4 $16.56
main bearing- list $17.25 my cost $13.11 you need just 1 $13.11
other main bearings- list $6.35 my cost $4.83 you need 4 $19.32

total cost- $52.17

Why do you guys like the stock bearings? I thought the clevites were a big improvement since they were lead alloy instead of steel and therefore less prone to spun bearings?

And no, I didn't assemble it wrong... there just happened to be a machining difference between the two blocks. There shouldn't be since they're all made on the same machine, but there was.

dan, james has stock bearings now instead of the 77. so far 14-15psi seems to be ok with stock bearings. chris (murix) had it on before also... and some others..
