38276, Head Gasket as 36,000 ....?? Posted by techboy, Nov-27-02 01:05 AM
So I dropped my car off at satan yesterday to get a 4-wheel alignment and the dealer calls at 3 telling me I have a blown head gasket. He says the car has a 6 year/60,000 mile power train warranty so he'll do it for nothing b/c my car only has 36,000. I did a search here and found 70+ topics for head gaskets but nobody is really talking miles. So what's the deal ... anybody else blow at head gasket at such low miles and what the heck happened??

Welcome to the world of our funked up headgaskets, mine was diagnosed as blown at 30k miles but im at 70k now with no visable leaks etc..
But they didnt offer to pay for it when I took it in so by all means get it done now for free
My GF neon (same engine, headgasket etc..) as been through 3 in under 50k miles, first one was bad at 30k then they didnt flatten the head and it happened again at 40K, they I got them to pay for it again with a 200 deductable at 50k cause it was leaking again, now shes at like 65k miles and no problems yet cause they finally put the MLS gasket on
Get it done for free, this is a SUPER COMMON problem with our cars esp. 95-97 98 and up SHOULD have the MLS gasket depending on when it was made in the 97-98 year

In my old 97 RS the head gasket blew out with less than 30k on it. They sure as hell didn't replace it for free for me...

My Neons was done under 60k. And my Eclipse just blew at under 40k.\
It just happens to ours, the stock HG isn't the best. The new MLS gasket is much better.

38285, There are *3* different MLS headgaskets Posted by thedawg, Nov-27-02 09:26 AM
Don't forget the top driver's side bolt was too long (actually it's hole was too shallow) from 95-98 and some 99's... if your HG blew on the back of the motor, grind off a little of that head bolt. Search the archives for more info.
ALSO!!!! There are *3* MLS head gaskets for our motor. Get the nice new 4-layer charcoal colored one and use the TSB and service manual specified Mopar Gasket Dressing spraycan stuff. I haven't heard of one of the new ones blowing yet...

Well I am crossing my fingers, I have a 99 with 37,000 miles on it. I check it regularly for leaks because I am not exactly easy on my car.

Thanks^^^ ... I was just about to ask that question. Since the dealer *offered* to do mine what are the chances they are using the MLS gasket vs. the stock? I will call on Friday and see what they used - is the "new" MLS a mitsu part or an aftermarket thing? I'll let you guys know what they did. Thanks for the input.

They have too....they are the ones who are making it...there are no other head gaskets from mitsu or dodge/chrystler. Unfortunatally for us dodge no longer sells just the head gasket. But now has to sell a "top end" kit for like $80+. The old part # was 5014131AC from dodge/chrystler it was $42.70 Description is GSKT PKG-C. Mitsubishi still sells the gasket separatly, but it is $10 more.

38293, I DIDN'T get the MLS Posted by techboy, Dec-01-02 02:03 PM
Well, I was FINALLY able to pick up my car on Sat at the dealer - I took it in on Tuesday + the holiday didn't help. Anyway ... RxR Eclipse - I wish you were right - appearantly they don't "have too" b/c I am staring at my invoice sheet from the repair and I have the exact part # on here you listed which according to you is the old one - no MLS for me. %$* So I guess another 36,000 until I blow this one. For those of you who knew I was away for a month - I have now driven my car about 4 miles in the past 7 weeks - talk about withdraw!

Hi,
Im at 150,000 miles. How can I tell if my headgasket is blown? I go tthe car at 100,000, and I have no clue what the people b4 did but I doubt they did anything really. Any signs for a blown head gasket?

38295, RE: I DIDN'T get the MLS Posted by MetalJim, Dec-01-02 04:40 PM
Damn Chris. Thats allright though. If it blows, we'll slap in a .022 copper job from http://www.headgasket.com/gaskets.html and bump you to 10.1:1 CR. :)
Mr. Pimp - check for oil in your antifreeze and antifreeze in your oil. It turns to a brownish goo when they mix - and is a definate sign of a blown headgasket.

38296, RE: I DIDN'T get the MLS Posted by UpToSpeed, Dec-02-02 04:42 AM
I had the head gasket on my 98 RS go at 62,000 miles. The dealership said they wouldn't cover it so I wrote a long letter to Mitsubishi explaining that unless they replaced it I would sue them. They called back and said "Mitsubishi is offering to pay for the head gasket itself."
I retorted, and I quote, "Heeeeeellllll no, it's a $50 piece of gasket. I want the labor paid for as well because I'm not spending my time to fix it." The next day the dealership called and said to bring my car down, Mitsubishi was paying for everything and they extended my warranty to 100,000 miles bumper to bumper...
Ya gotta fight, but in the end a victory over Satan is worth the hassle.
Good luck, Eric
