3801, Cam Gears...Need help on Adjusting
Posted by Talon95Stang, Jun-20-01 03:16 PM
I bought some adjustable cam gears and need some help on how much to adjust my timing. I bought the one's off groupbuycenter. I just wondered if any one knew how much to adjust each cam? I have headers, exhaust, air intake, underdrive pulley, and I'm getting nitrous(50 shot). Please help. I really dont want to play guessing games with my timing.

And can you over time you cams so the valves hit the pistons?

You can email me at Talon95Stang@cs.com

Thank,
Larry

best way to tune them is on a dyno....actually its the correct way. I dyno tuned mine when i was n/a with pretty much the same mods as you have now and, my best results came with -2 degrees on the intake side and -2 on the exhaust side. Cars vary so that might not be the best for you, so stick that car on a dyno and do it right.

I have rebuilt bottom end and pretty much everything in my engine is modified BUT i'll give you some ideas anyways of what i've tried (none has been on a dyno..just butt-o-meter readings)

Intake/Exhaust:

+2/-2 = crappy idle, not much power
+2/+2 = GOOD mid rpm setting for n/a
+5/+5 = AWESOME mid rpm setting and smooth engine response for n/a (if you have modified pistons that have extra valve clearance)
-2/-2 = good high rpm power but very poor mid rpm

I also have the gude cams....

OK so what do you think the best adjusting for my car would be?

..his settings are based off of reground camshafts (gude) so their power properties are a little different than on your stock camshafts.

I think the best settings are:

+2 intake/ -4 Exhaust:poor idle/good high rpm

+2 intake/ -2 Exhaust:decent idle/broad power

So far the BEST universal settings are the +2/-2 combo on 4 different people's dyno runs including Eclipse804 and Murix, but my car is *slightly* modded and I run mine on +2/-4. The idle is sh!tty and groggles but my high rpm power is strong and you really feel it "kick in" at 4000 with the power beginning around 3500.

The 2/2 has decent idle and 2-5 HP above 3000 and even more past 6000rpms. This is based off Murix and Eclipse804, on AEM(brand doesn't matter).
