37979, Which has a better gear ratio? Posted by JustOne, Nov-23-02 06:29 PM
I know nothing about gear ratios so which is better?
5th gear/ Tranny (A) 0.72 - Tranny (B) 0.81
Final Drive/ Tranny (A) 3.55 - Tranny (B) 3.94
OTGR Code/ Tranny (A) DLB 2.5 - Tranny (B) DLW 3.20
Basically I found some Neon trannies and I don’t know if I should go w/ a 96-99 DOHC (non ARC and RT) tranny or to go w/ a 95-99 SOHC Base tranny.
From looking at the link Fast420a posted all the other gears have the same ratio through 1st->4th.
Tranny (A) is the SOHC one and tranny (B) is the DOHC one. What do you think?
TIA Brian

At the drag races, I Would ALWAYS pull over a car leagnth more when I hit 3rd gear against neons. Most of the neons I raced were the 2.0dohc with similar mods to mine at the time. This was before I was turbo. Don't know if it was the gear ratio's or not...guess I really didn't answer your question! sorry.

The lower the final drive the acceleration will be slower in exchange for a higher top speed.
The higher final drive is better for acceleration in exchange for lower top speed. We have the 3.94 stock with the .81 5th gear. You can swap the .72 gear in for a higher top speed in 5th. Also a certain model saturn (not sure which one) has the NVG tranny with a 4.xx final drive which would accelerate even faster.
Since you are running 18 psi you may just want to go with 3.55 final drive for tractions sake.

ever play gran turismo and mess with the tranny setting? Well if you plan on making a top speed and keeping it there you can make your car faster cuz it spins faster. Your car doesn't have to work so hard but in the end your engine is gonna spinnin really fast but your not going nowhere hehe. But theoretically if you think of a topspeed you wanna run you'd choose a gear ratio that'll top out at that speed.

It might help if you could see an overall picture of what's going on at different RPMs with the different transmissions.

I ran that comparison with my tires. You should play around with the spreadsheet if you have different size tires. I also have a spreadsheet that calculates tire sizes. Check em out. http://www.users.fast.net/~metaljim/garage/TrannyWorkshop.xls http://www.users.fast.net/~metaljim/WheelWorkshop.xls

Is the final gear swap bossible for the manual tranny? I thought it was only possible for the auto.
