37629, cheap cai vs. aem ones and such Posted by berzerkled, Nov-20-02 09:00 AM
okay is there really much of a difference between lets say the aem cai compared to one of those cheap ones under $100 on ebay that are still cai?

Well, yes there is but you need to decide weather it's worth the price difference. The aem CAI is made of lightwieght aluminum, and the powder coat they use is heat deterent, so if heat does get next to it, it doesn't heat the tube, which would heat the air. and there are other little features about them that make them "higher" quality, but like i said before, are these features worth the difference to you? they were to me, so i bought the aem, also because i know the do alot of research and development with there products. so hopefully this helps you !!

AEMs are CARB-approved. they make a difference when you get smogged. that was why i got them. i didnt want to have to take it off during smog tests.

If you live someplace where you get smogged or something similar then go with the AEM, otherwise Ebay intakes are mo bueno. I bought mine for 60 shipped :p. It makes the cool noise, and will flow just as good as the AEM when i get a new filter. Plus the blue matches my car perfectly ;)

If you already have a short intake, just do this. It's cheap. About $10 added to the cost of the short intake. Get it at any Home Depot. You just have to run it down to the front airdam. Look on the main page under mods, and find the custom ram air setup.

Well my CAI dropped 2/10ths off of my quarter mile time, same as Todd's only difference being I have a cheap EBAY intake and he has an AEM CAI.

if you remove your plastic vent covers on the stock front, or have a body kit that allows it, air can flow right to the filter. It sits right behind there. Air hitting it constantly will help keep it cooler, and blow the hot air back and up I assume to help keep it away from the filter. :)

My CAI works like the rest but only cost $15. I made it out of ABS piping from the mods thing on 2gnt.com. Took it off since I got a 97-99 front now and there wasnt a good place for it to sit.. But if you want to save money, make it. Still $25 for the filter tho.

Ive had the PVC intake and it doesnt work nearly as well as one that is prefabbed. Just get a cheap CAI off of ebay and call it a day they work really well IMO
