Hey everyone.

Have a buddy of mine who has a 97 Talon ESi and I have a 98 ESi. We're comparing engines the other day and there's a particular part that he wasn't sure on that's on mine, but not on his. It bolts directly to the head and has a small wiring harness that eventually leads to the computer. He wasn't sure what it was and with me knowing zip about cars (I pray I at least got the description of this thing right), I figured I would post it to you all. If my description is vague (and how could it not be?), I can always post some quick shots withe my digicam tomorrow. Thanks for any info and sorry if this is a bit too noobish, I haven't gotten my shop manual yet.

I think you're looking at the thermostat, is it on teh right side of the head, toward the driver side? As for why it's one one car and not the other, i have no idea.

that is the correct location. But why would the thermostat be just attached with a bolt? I mean, it looks like just a wiring harness that's been bolted onto the head and I always thought the thermostat was buried somewhere? I could be wrong since I'm still learning (obviously) but just figured I would ask.

Its not a thermostat. The thermostat is trapped between the filler neck and head on the passengers side front of the engine. Some cars have an ignition capacitor bolted to the drivers side front of the valve. cover. Other cars have a wiring harness connector bolted to the valve cover in that location. I don't remember what the harness is connected to. Perhaps is one of your cars automatic and the other manual? I've only seen the capacitor located there on AT cars.

it's a capacitor - an ignition noise supressor. I have seen them both on the driver's side valvecover, and further down on the driver's side near the starter on different cars. It's not hugely important - mine is currently disconencted because i forgot to hook it up and has been for several weeks with no ill effects.
