37055, Howell ecu, here is what I think..... Posted by steve0677, Nov-14-02 12:30 PM
Alright, looks I'm one of the first ones to actually have this thing on my 97 talon. It took 8 weeks for it to come, and for 540 bucks is it worth it? Here is what I think after coming back from my test drive.... I even got to test it against some looser in a stock civic.
The mods on my car basically consist of are an exhaust, CAI, bored TB, unorothadox UDP, and the NGK 5-11e.
This thing was dynoed at something like what 10-15 extra hp? I was extremely scepticle of buying since I would be one of the first people to have it. But I have to say it feels like an easy 10 extra hp to the wheels, and 10 is being on the very conservative side, 20 is more what it feels like. For people who aren't going the turbo route, this should be a must have thing. My car feels completely different at all rpms.... And if your wondering I blew, and I mean blew the civic away.
For 540 bucks, it's worth it. What makes it even better is it's easier to put in then changing ur wiper blades. I'm positive the next person that gets this thing will side with me.

Did you send them your core? it should be cheaper with a return core ECU..

540 bucks that is alot for an ecu! what is the price if you send in a core?
|
37058, RE: Howell ecu, here is what I think..... Posted by steve0677, Nov-14-02 12:49 PM
yeah it woulda been 390 if i sent them the core.

I have a 96 esi talon, would the ECU they currently sell work in my car.
Since the Ecu advances timing would i be able to run it on the piss poor 91 sometimes 92 octane gas that i can get in kansas/missouri
TIA

So you're saying us unfortunate souls who live in CA and have to deal with 91 octane sewer water won't be able to use this wonderful upgrade?

I just ordered mine same price a few weeks ago...no core Im keeping my stock ecu just in case...

where to order this Afx ECU ? My car is 96 RS MTX it have OBDII ECU, can i use this Afx ECU? If far future later im going turbo is this Afx ECU can use with Hahn/star turbo kit?
Thanks

What about Nitrous? if it advances timing isn't that bad for N2O??? also if I did an engine rebuild going all motor and high compression, how would this ECU effect it?

I got it at www.howellautomotive.com. Im pretty sure they only make it for the 97 stick only, but I heard they possibly are makin it for other years. The ecu is not yet on their web page, call them about the nitrous and turbo cuz im not really sure.

If you are running the ECU and are concerned about the timing advance with turbo/nitrous then get the MSD DIS-2 to retard the timing to a safe level.

Why wouldn't a 97 ECU work in a 99 car? what's the difference?
I'm really dissapointed that they aren't making them for 99 and only for 97 cars
|
37068, RE: Howell ecu, here is what I think..... Posted by DarkOne, Nov-15-02 01:37 AM
They are making them for all 97-99 cars, and possibly 96's if you're lucky. They just haven't started development on the 99 models yet.

I really want this ECU. I heard that the 97-99 ECUs are all the same. But the 96 ECU is differnt and we know the 95 ECU is way different because of OBDI vs OBDII. I know that the 96 and 97-99 ECUS have the same pin count and plug in harness snaps. So I don't know what the difference is. Must be internal. Check out these two links:

I really, really, want one of these ECUs, can't you unplug your defenser with them?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is so different about the 96 ecu from the 97-99 ecu's i thought the plug ins were the same and they are all OBD-II

96 and 97 ECU is same an OBDII, and i don't know if there is something different inside the engine bay, because I never compare them side by side.

Is this thing C.A.R.B for us California people? If not we are not going to be able to send the core back. We are going to have to keep it to smog the car.

I've got an extra '96 ecu that howell can use for testing, if they would ever get back to me. I've emailed and posted several times, but no one replies. I'm thinking about calling them, but who should I talk to? Gary himself?

If you buy the ECU then tack on a MSD to retard the added timing, arent you just wasting your money on the ECU? i might be wrong, but isnt most of their gained HP from bumping up the timing? if you are NA and plan to stay that way this is a great product, im still not sold on it at all for turbo or nitrous use. id just like an ECU that didnt fuck with stuff so much like the 97 ECU does, screw timing advance or leaning out the fuel.

shouldn't matter.. since you can't visibly tell that the ECU has been switched when putting the AFX one in. so as long as ya pass the tail pipe test and teh rest of the stuff you can actually see is different, has their carb numbers.. i'd think you would be good to go.

Hey guys, one last update for ya's. After driving my car for the entire weekend, I have to say this thing is even better than I first thought. It's gotten stronger since the first time I drove it. I would trade all the mods I have on my car for this thing just because it is more powerful than all combined. I compare my talon now to my last car.... an 89 alfa romeo milano 3.0 with 190hp. That thing hauled ass, but I would put my money on my talon in a race.

What affect would this have with something like AEM cam gears or am i thinking about two totally unrelated things?
|
37081, RE: Howell ecu, here is what I think..... Posted by Matt_95tgs, Nov-17-02 02:02 PM
The aem cam gears adjust valve timing. The ecu adjusts spark timing.

i drive a 98 non turbo and was wondering what exactly an ecu does and what it screws up. If i am stock except intake can i buy an ecu and not have to buy anything else to make up for it screwing things up? Also is it hard on the engine?

i just called howell automotive and they said the 98-99's should be out after the first of the year. might be something to get with the income tax money!!! later
