I got a 96' GS and i want to convert it from a automatic to a manual. what will i need to get done to convert it.

i would tell you to run a search but even then you wouldn't get anything cause there has yet to be a thread that has everything listed that is required for this swap.

I know that youve heard this, and I know Ill just be another annoying fuck sayin it, but I wouldnt recommend this. As many others say annoyingly its not worth the money when you could instead sell your car and buy a manual one. Just my opinion, and Im sorry that I cannot help more

OK, to all the people who think it's not worth it...

If you are planning to do it yourself, it is most definitely worth doing the swap. After you swap, sell off the old Auto tranny, shift assembly, etc... and make more than half your money back.

Some junk yards or parts stores may even work out a deal where they will swap all parts with you for $200 - $300...

So if you don't have to pay for labor, it is DEFINITELY worth it. I know some of you out there are probably upside down in your car and selling the current car and buying a MT is not even an option.

it's worth doing it for me, my car has 23,000 miles, if I sell it to get another manual I'll never find one with such low miles and never beat on

One of the Atlanta guys was the first I am aware of to have done this swap and it only cost him in the area of $500 total and only a day to get done. How is that not worth it? It also seems that the feedback that I get from every single person who has done it felt it was more than worth it.

Basically, you need at minimum:

Trans.
Modular Clutch Assembly
brake pedal
clutch pedal
master cylinder, and linkage, and hoses
slave cylinder
motor mounts, front and rear
shifter assembly (shifter,cables,mount,etc.)
all hardware to bolt it together (nuts, bolts, etc)

..and if you want a speedo, you'll need an MTX ecu from the same model year as your car. There's a little custom wiring involved to get your speedo and reverse lights back.

thanks dino, i have 700 bucks now, just picked up a tranny, and now buying all the other shit, ill let you guys know how it goes once I begin doing the swap. I'll be recording it on tape and taking plenty of pictures, when I do it expect a write up for the 2g

You might want to pick up a flywheel as well... comes in handy :)

These cars use modular clutches - there is no seperate flywheel.

Ok morons who siad that it aint worth it. Let me start by saying that i bought a 99 GS for a dam good price, but guest what it was auto, due to the fact i hate auto in a sport car i did the swap, and boy i love my car and was worth every penny. For anyone who wanna know what you need i can list everything that is needed, for the 99 of course probably the same with older. Well her goese.

These are the parts i bought and prices.

1>Tranny came with slave cylinder from a 97 model=cost $550
2>Stock clutch with 10,000 miles used temporary=cost $50
3>Clutch and Brake Pedal, and Shifter with leather booth Slave Master=cost $75
4>Shift cables new from mitsubishi=cost $88
5>Clutch hydraulic lines, depends on if tranny came with the 2 pieces already installed and not cut. If uncut only need longest metal line
=cost $15. If tranny dont have other 2 pieces to slave,=cost $10 a piece.
6>Bracket that mounts hydraulic clutch oil line to strut housing, dont need it but i wanna do perfect=cost $16
7>Need 3 washers, and lock pin for shift cables can buy set of lock pin from parts store=cost $2 and washer for $2 a pack
8>Need dremel tool to cut from inside of fire wall under dash can see patern where slave master is mounted.
9>Rear tranny mount bracket, not mount,if not recieved with manual transmission=cost $75 from mitsubishi
10>Need 4 longer bolt for gear shifter, match original short one with a tool shop with same thread size but half in longer.
11>Speed sensor plug and reverse light switch plug from salvage yard=cost $10
12>CV Axles are the same
13> All tranny mounts are the same
14> Will need to cut flywheel cover plate to mount slave cylinder.

Cost to do project estimates between $650 and $900 depending on how much tranny and other parts were bought for. And this price reflects if done by oneself not paying a shop.

I have a link on the comp at my house that has instructions on how to do it on a 1G.. I dunno if that would help or not though, Ill post the link when I get home from work... It has pictures and every thing. There is a guy around where I live that I talked to that did it on his 2G. He said it cost him around 1,500$, he did it him self and thats not counting him selling his old tranny back.
