3677, engine swap or turbo kit
Posted by theo, Jun-18-01 11:36 AM
i'm a little confused about going turbo or swapping my engine for a gst. my friend crashed his gst and is selling me all the parts, engine, gearbox, wiring harness, computer, axles, fuel pump. the only problem i have is getting the engine mounts welded in. if i buy the turbo kit for my car ,i can only run about 7psi on stock internals. if i upgrade my stock internals that is gonna run me an extra $2500 plus the kit that costs. about $3000. i spoke to a japanese mechanic and he told me that the evolution 4,5 or 6 engines can fit directly in our car. the only problem with that is it is very difficult to get one from japan. i'm just trying to find out if you improve the bottom end on our 420a motor, can it still handle high boost without blowing up .what advantages apart from crankwalk do we have over the gst motor if the stock internals are modified.

Well I am running 7 psi and I can spank a GS-T. They have small turbos in them. I think a stock one runs about a 15.2 in the quarter mile compared to a 420a at 7 pounds which should run a mid to low 14. turboed 420a's are sooo much faster but of course if you are into walking cranks go ahead spend a lot of money installing a 4g63 in your car. As you can probably tell, I would get the turbo kit!!

I was thinking about doing this also...Evo engine...well, it turned out to be REALLY expense!!! About the price for internals and a turbo kit:P And when you do that, WATCH OUT V8's AND TWIN TURBO SUPRAS!!!!!!!!!!!

Swapping a GST motor takes alot of time and alot of money. First you have to get new motor mounts as the 4g63 won't fit easily. Next you have to do some major fabrication as the transmission is on the otherside. All in all I've heard it would cost more to do then buying and modding a GSX. If you want a JSPEC motor go to www.soko.com and they sell them for anywhere between $500 and $700 plus the cost of frieght shipping. They have about 30,000 miles on them and they have more horse then the american 420a. Or if you wanna try something that i'm pretty sure hasn't been done before you could try to drop a vr4 engine in your ride but I don't know if it would work just rumured to be able to fit.

i've heard of vr-4 engines in a 1g but that is mad rediculous that thing is meant for awd, putting that on front wheels is like sayin "fuck my cv's"

...the 420a block can handle 700HP of boost and NOS WITH ONLY RODS AND PISTONS. There is absolutely no need to get one of the other 4G engines from Mitsubishi. We have good trannies that can take the power and a 6 year motor design that more efficiently burns fuel. The icing is that our 2GNT's come with shorter gears that does a better job of out accelerating the 4G siblings. Sure the 4G engines are good but you also have to get a 4G tranny and change have the mounting points chnged besides rebuilding the tranny when it f*cks up. Just look at all the guys who are running 8 pounds or less on the 420a and how fast their cars are. They are BURNING moded GS-T's. Here's a good scenario. You buy your 2GNT for 16K(but realistically less) and dump 6K in it (turbo kit, injectors, ignition amp and rebuilt block) and you will outrun anything on the street at 20 pounds and it still costs less then the comparable same year GS-T. Just at 10 pounds you will be in possession of a 280HP engine for the mere cost of a stage 2. The stage 1 will tear up any slightly modified GS-T. YES the 420a can handle whatever you throw at it so long as it is supplied with 2 things: Block upgrade and fuel.

Check out http://www.turbosystem.com for the 600HP NEON that eat's Vipers. The 420a couple with it's short gearing make short work of mild competition. I wouldn't think of trading my engine for the GS-T. The only difference is that the typical croud who bought the GS-T's have the money to perform the modifications. We are just the special few who wanted the looks and now want the power.

I heard that a 4g63 swap was very hard and time/$$$ consuming. I would build it and go for a stage 3. U are probably lookin at 300 something Horses with that. Stage 2 is like 275 I think at 10 PSI on the HRC.
