36682, Anyway to check valve seals? Posted by 420aVenger, Nov-09-02 07:37 AM
Well I still have a vac leak at idle and my car burns oil every now and then. I know it's not the rings because I have zero blowby and my compression is 185 all across on 8:1 compression. I also have no water in the oil so w/ that and the high comp numbers I don't think it's the HG. The only other way I can think of that oil would get into the combustion chamber is through the valves seats. Does that make sense becaue I honestly don't know much about the valvetrain stuff. I know you can use oil to test if the rings are worn but is there any way to test valves?

Use the leakdown oil to test if the rings are worn. If you know that the HG isn't blown AND your rings aren't worn then there is only ONE alternative - the valves are leaking compression. Doesn't mean they're leaking oil...just compression. However, if your rings aren't leaking compression then they're not leaking(blowing) oil. At that point, the only suggestion that I have is that your valve stems may need to be replaced....that is as long as your valve cover gasket, cam seals, main seal, cam position sensor seal, and oil pan gasket aren't leaking.

You said check the other seals and gaskets. I don't know if I specified but it's burning oil in the cylinders not just leaking and burning up. It's smoking from the exhaust. The valves aren't leaking compression because my compression is pretty high and exactly the same across all cylinders. So can oil be going into the combustion chamber through the valve stems?

what i did was i got the compression tester fitting and hooked it up to my air compressor and put 50 psi of continuous air in there and with my valve cover removed i could see if there was any air leaking, they all leaked a little, but some were really bad so i replaced them all. you have to rotate the cams for each cylinder and have the valves open so you can hear. you can also do that boost leak test thing with the compressor on the turbo and listen if there is any leakage. other than that, i dunno? lates james

Oh I see. Yes it is possible that to leak through the valve guides. The valve stem to guide clearance limit is .003 inches on the intake side and .004 inches on the exhaust(pretty damn close). If you wear the stems/guides past the limit they will start to leak into your intake charge and/or exhaust flow. You may have good compression, BUT you should still do a leakdown to see if rings are good. A leakdown will confirm weather or not the rings are leaking. You may find that you have 10lbs more pressure in all cylinders with a bit of oil in the chamber. If your headgasket is good and your rings are good - then the guides may be leaking.
Have you checked your PCV valve? Maybe it's stuck open or something like that. That's the only other "oil burner" that I can think of right now. If your rings are good(do the leakdown) - You could probably rule out the PCV valve by just venting it(detach it from your intake) temporarily to see if you're still smoking/burning oil.

PCV valve goes to the catchcan already. I'll do a leakdown and see what happens. If the valve guides are bad will it hurt the car to run it like that until spring when I have the motor back out to fix it?

Easiest way I know of to check them is visual. Pull the intake and exhaust manifolds and get a flashlight. Take a look., If they are leaking oil you will see it. Exhaust side easy... intake side could be... difficult...

Damn shame - one of the most internal of the internals. Well - just keep the oil level up so you don't hurt your other bearings and whatnot - but yeah, you should be able to run just fine with them leaking.
EDIT: This problem is generally not something that gets worse and worse unless you really push the revs. Keep the RPM reasonable(under 6k) until you can fix it.

Man I was just sitting at a light today and the exhaust started pouring smoke. I was seriously sitting in a cloud that's how much there was. Then I took off and it hasn't smoked since. Why is it so hit and miss? Shouldn't it be consistent?

That is exactly what my car was doing.
I talked to a mechanic, and he said that the rings might be trying to stick on it, and to put some restore in it.
My headgasket is not blown b/c I have checked it, but it would smoke sometimes, and then not smoke.
I haven't gotten to do a compression check on the engine, or a leakdown yet, but I have a question about the leakdown. If it goes up by ten or more, is that bad??

>If it goes up by ten or more, is that bad??
Not nessicarily. If it goes up then it means that your rings are starting to wear. 10 isn't so bad. You would probably want to think about replacing them once they get around 20 or 30 or so(depends on altitude, temp, compression, etc.).
