Anyone have any idea why my belts squeak when its cold and rainy out? I just had them replaced along with the timing belt 1000k miles ago, so its kind of pissing me off. Makes the car sound like an old piece of garbage..Thanks.

tension on the belts is not what it should be, on the cold days the belt gets harder and looses some of the friction it once had when its warm and the belt is nice and rubbery

My accessory belt comes off if it's not abnormally loose.

i just had my shop fix my belts while i was getting work done. that alone took them a few hours to get it right and they stopped squeeking for about a week. i wouldn't worry too much.

if it took a shop a few hours to tighten your belts, they really suck. without ever touching the engine before, it shouldnt take more than 15 minutes.

for the power steering/ac belt, look for the tensioner behind the passenger side headlight. it will be above the a/c compressor and in front of the power steering pump (its the small pully). loosen the bolt (dont remove it) that runs through the pully into the mounting assimbly and runs perpindiculer with the length of the car. loosen that bolt (4ish full turns). then locate the bolt on the same assembly that runs parallel with the length of the car on the mounting assembly. tighten it towards the rear of the engine bay to add a little tension, then re-tighten the bolt that runs through the pully.

for the alternator belt: the same type of tensioner applies, but the bolt head to loosen the assembly is facing towards the engine instead of away from it (like the p/s on is). youll have to feel behind the bracket to locate it. loosen that and then adjust the second bolt (as per the p/s belt) to creat more tension.

listen first to check witch one is loose, you dont want to overtighten. the belts are supposed to deflect around 1/2" with roughly the pressure of one finger on them in the longest stretch between the pullies.

Mine did the same thing.....squeaking like crazy on cold or wet days and when it was nice and sunny never or whenever i would turn the wheel sharp. I got in there and tighted the belt up...NO MORE SQUEAKS! :)

Does Autozone or Pepboys sell the belt tensioner? the screw for the tensioner broke on mine.

autozone doesn't have it.

i just tried to fix the same problem today.. mine was pleanty tight.. so it wasnt that... but when i sprayed the belt with silicone spray (i dont know.. one of the techs at the dealership i work at recomended it) it stopped for a while... but i dont know... maybe my belts are too tight?

hey i a new member to this site.my belt did it to only when i had the air on.it was the alt. belt but i tightend it up and it aint done it since then but it might be summin else ............

For years I had a really squeaky P/S belt when it rained. It was that way when I got the car. It was because the idler pulley bearing was shot. There is a bearing in the center of that pulley. Try taking the pulley off. If you can wiggle the inner race on the bearing then that is probably your problem. The dealership charges approximately $150 for a replacement idler assembly - they don't sell the bearing or even just the pulley. The only sell the whole assembly brackets and all. The good news is that if this is your problem, you can get a $6 replacement bearing from McMaster Carr. I replaced mine and no more squeak. Here check it out.
