36581, 2.4L DOHC Headswap Emergency Posted by UpToSpeed, Nov-08-02 12:14 AM
A friend of mine just swapped his 2.4L to a 2G 4G63 Head. After everything has been put back into place, it will not start correctly. The timing has been checked, spark checked, it's getting fuel, and it attempts to start. This is what happens:
The engine sounds like a lawn mower trying to start. It will attempt but then stutter for a while and then come popping to a halt. The engine will barely try to roll over with out any gas, but depressing the gas pedal about 1/10 the way down it will try, start firing, sputter and then die.
If anyone has any ideas, they would be GREATLY appreciated... need the car up as soon as possible.
Thanks!

You probably forgot to hook up some sensor, check all wiring etc..

I've checked and rechecked for about 6 hours, I can't seem to locate a single extra plug or two plugs which might be reversed, or anything that looks abnormal...
I'll check again though as soon as I get off work. So please keep the suggestion commin' or I'll have an even longer night ahead fo me!
Thanks again.

Maybe im reading this wrong or maybe u mistyped it but why a 420A 2.4L block with a mitsu 4G63 head?

Assuming that you just mistyped it, it sounds like its some problem with your ignition. It is possible that you didnt route the right wire from the coil to the plug. So id double check that.

It's probably a 4g64. (2g Sypder, 3g RS/GS) The 4g63 head probably doesn't even bolt up to the 2.4L 420A.

Correct, it is a 4G64 with a 4G63 head. Sorry, should have specified that.
As to the idea of the correct wire running to the ignition coils, there is another plug that would fit to the coils, but we have tried that one as well... There is absolutely no spark then...
The engine is getting both spark and fuel and even turns over... only for a few moments before it comes sputtering to a halt with occasional backfire..
Edit:
And the correct wires are going to the correct plugs. The coil packs were removed from the car with wires intact and then reinstalled in the same position.

did u reset the ecu after unplugging the coil packs?

Is there a manual reset or anything? Because the battery was disconnected for about a day so I would guess that should do it.

I don't know much about those, or most engines, but were there any sensors in the head itself? Not in the intake manifold, but the actual head. If so maybe they read differently or have different pin locations than the original 4G63 sensors. So maybe they are reading wrong and sending a bad signal to your ECU.

Do you know if there are any wiring issues with the 4g63 cam angle sensor?
You might try http://4g64.150m.com - they're the 4g64 gurus and may be able to help you better than us.

Found the problem... apparently we had too much trust in the person who sent the head. Two of the cylinders had no compression due to bent valves...
beware of dsm traders...

THAT SUCKS, After the whole build up you have to redo 2 valves.
