Ok this ? might sound stupid.

But I live in Arizona so I always use the thickest oil because its always warm enough to start. q-state 20w-50. Ok well anyways been sluggish starting lately and I think its because of the cold. Cold was ok before, but not now. Anyways, I found quake state 15w-40 which is thinner, slightly, for "Hard working engines such as 4X4s" then it has a picture of a truck, suv and van. well I got it. Im ok right? Its just oil. I figure since my engine works really hard since its not that strong itll be ok since its a hard working engine.... its synthetic too. So Im wondering is the 4X4 thing just some stupid thing that doesnt matter?

well 4x4 oil isnt gonna damage your engine. its just formulated for those engines probably to withstand stress and all. i know it gets pretty cold there, used to live there, so youll want to change your oil for the winter. im trying to remember which one it is, but i was always told to run straight whatever 30, 40, whatever in the winter, and 10w 30, or whatever in teh summer. someone correct me if its backwards, but i believe your supposed to run one at one time and one at another. thats what i have heard anyways.

i used to live in Wisconson, i'd go outside some mornings and couldn't even see the car. there would be like 5ft of snow covering everything, i'd have to find the 6' spot and go dig out the car.

i'm in New Mexico, right now i am using 20w-50 Royal Purple oil, i don't like it. was using 3qts. of Valvoline 20w-50, 1 1/2qts. Hyperlube-race formuala. seemed to work alot better, even in cold weather, as long as i let the car warm up first. not so with the R.Purple, my engine has not been running as good since i changed to it.

in the vegas desert, i use 10w40 all yr long, but may change this winter, its actually pretty cold for this time of the year which is only tellin me its fin to be hella cold in Jan/Feb...

but to let dude ^^up there know, we need 4.5qts per oil change, i dun think your engine likes your 3-4qt change, although u are givin her da premium shiot ;-)

i was using 3 quarts of the valvoline synthetic and 1 and a half of the hyperlube. i mite just suck at math but i think that adds up to 4 and a half.

yeah vegas was freaking cold... damn shoulda shouted out to vegasdsmr//....hehe i was there this past weekend...working for the comp show... ;)

why doesnt everyone just use 5W-30 like your suppossed to? It's plenty cold during the winters in NY and plenty hot during the summer in Md and I never have a problem

Not always true. I use Mobil 1 10w30 and nothing else. Using a higher weight oil simply means is is thicker when cold, which leads to less lubrication at startup, which can, over the life of a car, lead to premature bearing wear and possibly failure. I live in Houston, where 100* summers are the norm, and 30* winter mornings happen just as often. After the inital teardown of my original motor (104K on the odo), everything was in perfect shape (no scoring of cylinder walls or bearing surfaces, no blueing on the bearings, everything looked new).

having been a mechanic....it is a good idea to use 10w-30 full synthetic oil...either mobil one or castrol syntec...you can also go 6-10k miles between oil changes....i change mine at 9k and it comes out looking nearly as good as the day it went in...my father use mobil 1 in his BMW and went 20-22k miels between changes and the car now has 220,000 miles on it...using 20w-50 is a bad idea because it is too heavy and your engine will never get hot enough to make full use of it..

how many detergents are in mobil 1 ??

anyone ever try Mobil 1 0W-30? thats what I use
