36477, Lash Adjuster Noise.....
Posted by Nitrous_RS1997, Nov-06-02 02:04 PM
When we first started the engine, there was, of course, some lifter/lash adjuster noise. this normally would go away in about 30 minutes to an hour. but it hasnt. we put all the original stuff back into the original head after we got it off the old block, and onto the new one. they werent making noise before, but i think i might have an idea why they are now. they sat out of the head, on a piece of cardboard(in order) for the better part of 2 weeks while i got around to having time to put it all back together. when i did put it back together, i didnt think to make sure the adjusters were "primed", or at least half-way filled with oil. im thinking maybe over the time they sat there that the needed oil seeped out, causing the noise. if so, will the PT Cruiser lifter/lash adjusters drop right into our heads with no other mods? or should i just get stockers? if thats the case, anyone got a part# so the dealer doesnt f-up? thanks guys.

Well, this is what happened to my stock rockers after A LOT of trips to 7200+ rpms with the regrind cams.

I also have a LOT of lifter noise when the car is actually running.

I was going to purchase these for the build up that I was about 60% ready for but now the car is going away for good. . . :( but enough about my bullshit hassles.

Blackdog Motorsports Rockers for DOHC
These new rockers are an improvment of the PT style. They feature much better oil control to help keep lifters pumped, as well as MUCH improved oiling of the cam lobe and roller follower, due to revised oil outlet area.
Blackdog Rockers, set of 16: $170

PT Lash Adjusters and Rockers for DOHC
A must have upgrade for your DOHC motor, these parts prevent the oil areation and cracked rockers common with the original parts.

Mopar Lash Adjusters, updated "PT" style: $93 per set of 16
Mopar Rocker Arms, upgraded "PT" style: $145 per set of 16

Don't forget to replace the rockers while you are at it. They have to come off to swap the lash adjuster. I would hate to see yours snap and you not be as lucky, mine didn't get in the way of the cams at 7200+ rpm when they broke. :-)

Good luck on the road to 11's.

36487, Here's the Lash Adjuster/Rocker removal walkthru.
Posted by Fast420A, Nov-07-02 01:10 AM
This was originally from a Mopar Mag and then Kiku made the writeup and I copied it and hosted the pics on my site.

Now I know it says a few hours of your time but I am telling you, I have been in and out of the valve cover and changed all 16 lifters in 30 minutes tops.

Here you go:

Author: Kiku
Category: Engine
Application: 1995-I4 1996-I4 1997-I4 1998-I4 1999-I4 2000-I4 2001-I4
Date Created: Dec/4/2000
Instructions:

Tools required:
-2 long flathead screwdrivers
-Lots of patience and about a few hours of your time

1) Before starting on each valve, make sure the follower is on the base circle of the cam of the cylinder you are working on. In other words, the nose of the cam lobe should be straight up. You can just tap the starter each time to get there; do a few at a time in order in which the lobes are 'up'.

Place the first screwdriver blade against the adjacent head bolt. This will keep the tip of the screwdriver from sliding away from the cam follower. Really big screwdrivers are the secret to making this job a cinch.

2) Place the tip of the second screwdriver under the lash-ajuster end of the cam follower and push it down against the head casting as shown. This will compress the valve spring and the follower will start to lift up and slide away from the lash ajuster.

3) Use the screwdriver on the right to control the cam follower side movement and slowly release the left screwdriver until the follower is free from any load.

4) Now you can simply pull out the lash ajuster and drop in a new one.

5) Time to slip in the new cam follower. Simply place the follower on the end valve tip with the opposite end positioned next to the lash ajuster. Again place the tip of a screwdriver against the head bolt and move the cam follower toward the lash ajuster.

6) use the second screwdriver to lift the cam follower which compresses the valve spring. Use the first screwdriver to move the follower to the left over the lash adjuster. Slowly release the second screwdriver to lower the follower onto the lash ajuster. Done! Just 15 more and you can head out on the highway...

I think you may just need to replace those lifters. When i did my head job, we actually pumped the lfters all the way DOWN (as in, almost no oil in them) so that the valvs wouldn't "over lift" and not seat as they should. After a few mionutes, the oil pressure pumped them back up, they quit clacking away, and all was good.

you know what....now that i think back to it, i dont think i even took the lifters out of the head, just the rockers. and im 99.9999% POSITIVE they are in the correct order in the head. would the head sitting for about 3 weeks cause the lifters to lose the oil they needed or to go bad? they didnt click at all before this. any other ideas?

Either way the new design has a nice sized oil hole to keep the rockers from running out of oil.

while it is outstanding that i now know how to switch to the p.t. lifters is there a certian way to change the rocker arms if you want to do both??? and what is the torque setting on them ?? any special tools??? any one with a answer or link would help out before i take on this project. now waiting on egr elimation kit. :thumbsup i will be getting the rocker arm/lifter set set from howell automotive i want to get rid of the tick i run 15w50 mobil one oil in my car suspect of why the ticking bomb sound under my hood :wary since i am boosted.... }> thanks....
36492, RE: Lash Adjuster Noise.....

Yeah, the rocker arms just slip right out once you relieve the pressure with the big screwdrivers. You can replace both at the same time. There is no torqueing involved - just screwdriver leverage.

>p.t. lifters is there a certian way to change the rocker
>arms if you want to do both???

Yeah, the rocker arm is what you take off to get to the lifter.

and what is the torque
>setting on them ??

Nothing, they are held in by the lifters, cams and valves.

any special tools???

After using DEEP WELL sockets to get the valve cover off, you need two screw drivers to remove the rocker and then the lifter can usually pull out be hand if not, use a pair of pliers.

.
>now waiting on egr elimation kit.

Just use a piece of sheet metal and cut it to the shape of the EGR tube flange and put it on the intake manifold side of the EGR tube and leave the EGR shit hooked up if you don't want a CEL but if you don't care, remove all the vac tubes and other EGR shit and block off the exhaust side of the EGR tube the same way with sheet metal.
:-)
