Alright all you engineers out there.. can you build one of these? I think this would rock up on the dash..

Neat. Sorry, but I'm more of a mechanical engineer than an electrical engineer. Not that I'm either, because really I'm a software engineer...but I'm a pretty good mechanical engineer.

um...dude, Look under the $180 price. It's $99 bucks for US.

Yea it comes out of AU. I was just wondering what it would take to build one myself. I did some searching last night on the net, but did not come up with anything good. I think this thing would be great at the dragstrip instead of a "monster tach" or a single shift light. It would also prove usefull at autox.

That looks pretty cool indeed. I was looking into the Autometer "pill" setup ones, but that whole deal will be well over 100 bucks anyway. When i was at the track, it was hard trying to look at all the gauges and esp the tach, for knowing when to shift. I like it.. Who wants to be the test dummy? hehe..

I'm still going to look into how hard it would be to build my own...I know that I could spend the $100 to get it but...that would not benifit anyone else much. If I can figure out how to build one......we could all benifit from it.

Ok here is my thoughts ( im sort or an electrical engineer without the schooling) Im not sure about the tach signal to the guage cluster but Im guessing its a voltage that ranges from like 1 to 5 volts (assuming this is correct, I dont know the exact values but maybe someone could post that) so at 500rpm's your getting like .5 volts (or whatever it is) then at 6000rpms your getting like 6 volts I dont know if thats how the tach works but its my guess
So if that is true, then what you want to build is an EXACT copy of a blinky air/fuel guage but you will need to change the resistor values so that at say 6vdc input (tach signal) it turns on blinky light #1 (instead of like .1vdc like on the air/fuel meter then at 6.2vdc (or 6200rpm's light 2 turns on (get it??)
So where the last light on the air/fuel guage turns on at 1vdc (signal from o2 sensor) your last light will turn on when the voltage to the guage is whatever the voltage is at 7200rpms or where ever you want to shift
Hope that made sense here is a link to a o2 sensor schematic the resistors will need to be changed for whatever voltage you want each light to turn on but if what I said about the voltage is correct thats how you do it http://www.students.tut.fi/~eppu/dev/EGO-bar.html or http://www.euronet.nl/users/fo_elmo/afdisplay.htm

Actually, most tach signals are pulsating grounds. The ground pulses get more rapid with higher rpm, and less rapid with lower rpm. The tach gauge interprets this, and gives you the rpm.

at all? Seems kinda cool but the fact you have to prep on an even plane and it goes through the cigerette lighter seems odd...
