36092, adjustable rev limiter for launch...
Posted by 510eclipse, Oct-31-02 06:12 AM
alright im sorry if this sounds a little newbie of me, i hate not knowing the name of a part i am looking for, but ive been wondering about this for months now.

when i go to the races i sometimes see cars (often times hondas) stage at a certain rpm level, but they are just sitting there with the clutch in and the gas pedal to the floor it seems. because they just sitt there wailing at a constant rpm, then when the race starts they launch and the car races of like every other car. i asked my friend about this and he said it was like a msd rev switch or something like that. when i went and researched all the msd ignition stuff, all i basically foudn was rev switches where you could install a chip of whatever rpm you want (2000rpm, 2500rpm, 7,000 rpm...etc.) and then have it engage whatever you wanted at that rpm, like a specific timing retard, or nitrous in some way or another.
this all seems very cool and helpfull, but if possible i would like to have a rev limiter that i could flip on a switch on my dash, so i could always launch at a consistant 2800 rpm for example. this seems like a fairy tail in my head though, and i am probably just seeing a bunch of dumb honda guys sitting there with the pedal to the metal, launching while sitting on their rev limiter at 7000+ rpm's hahaha. somebody with technical knowhow on these ignition systems please drop some knowledge. tia.

That's exactly what is was. On any aftermarket ignition amp, you have stage rev limits, my Crane has 2. You can set them with chips, my Crane has built in dials, to pick whatever you want. Best way to do it is to have a momentary switch. As long as the ignition amp sees 12 volts on a certain lead it will hold the preset rev limit. So hold the button down at the starting line as you launch and get going let go and the rev limit is gone and you can run up to the ECU redline.

FYI, they work much better on ATX cars.. cause then ya just hold it to the floor and let go of the 'button' on green and away the car goes.. cause ya know that if you have a MTX you'll have to get off the gas at the launch (as you are engaging the clutch) or your gonna have a horrible launch anyway.

Breezio is right. I believe it is a little harder to launch a MTX with the "studder box" setup. I set up my Crane ignition to do this, in conjunction with a momentary NOS button, and I must say that my reaction time sucks! It's hard to concentrate on your reaction time, have your right finger on the rev limiter button, and anticipate lights on the tree. But, it sounds so cool :)

ill learn to deal with the button or design something special to help. if any body could tell me a minimal list of what i'd need to build a "studder box" for my car id be more than greatfull. thanks for everyones input :-)

An ignition amp with staging ability, wires, connectors, and a momentary switch to activate the staged rev limit.

We hook up the rev limit from the DIS-2 to the hand brake. Works fine and leaves my hand close to the shifter. You could also always wire it to the clutch.

I was thinking clutch switch would be cool.. but then everytime you shift your gonna hit that rev limiter, hand brake would probably be better.. sounds like a good place to me.

If you had one of these on an AT car could you rev higher than if you powerbreak. Like could you rev it to maybe 3800 RPM? I know I can't powerbreak that high without moving.

you wouldn't be able to rev higher with just the 'stage limiter' on an ATX.. that would require having a higher stalh converter.

really, if you are wanting to rev high in AT, then neutral drop. It's not gonna make much difference really. Higher stall converters are just gonna probably be the same effect. Gonna get heat. Heat is what kills an AT.

yeah, but neutral drops are much harder on the gears themselves, atleast when you preload it (power brake) then the load is already there and is engaged smoothly, when ya drop it from neutral it's WAY harder on the tranny, but ya don't get all the heat from power braking.

4g63 guys can get ECU's programmed to make a rev limit @0 mph with the clutch in. so as long as they are at a dead stop and holding the clutch they are limited. lot of GSX's have these at like 6000rpm.
