I need to have my mains line bored. Has anyone had this done? Will I need to use oversized main bearings or what? Any info on this topic would help!

Why do your mains require a line bore?

He could have spun a bearing.

usually that does not lead to main journal damage, though - just crank and bearing damage. That's why i asked.. if he did, he spun one BAD.

Dino, while we're on the subject, any pointers for building a new short block?
I bought a block from Lo RS 4me and having punched out .020 over with JE 8.8's, Eagle rods, new stock bearings, and a new stock crank. Also, how much should the head be ported and what does it require to install oversized valves? I have the Crane cams, springs, and retainer kit, AEM cam gears.
I was also planning on doing the Venom intake manifold, 60mm billet throttle body that was for sale on the board. Anything else? Please just PM me. 420aTurbo

Line boring needs new mains. Are you using a different bedplate from the original? I'd get a second opinion unless you know the guy and he's not trying to screw you. Dino's right, it's pretty hard to screw up the mains unless something bad happened esp since we have a bedplate and not individual caps.

Yes... it's a different bedplate.

They really do need line bored.

It's a long story, but the car was run for a mile or so with NO OIL so it's messed up pretty good. I had to grind the stock rods off the crank. I ended up getting a new crank and bedplate.

Yeah, I kinda figured that one first b/c I had a couple of guys ask me to rebuild some Chevy SB's and they just gave me a handful of caps w/ no stamps on where they went, so needless to say they were pissed when they had to pay a machine bill for stupidity. Make sure that the machinest knows which bearings you are getting so he bores it to the right size. Also make sure you use the same hardware to put it together or your bearings might not seat right. Might check what he TQ's the bolts to also.

Whoever said they have Crane retainers... they don't make them for us yet... Only for the Neons. I talked to Crane on it and they should have ones for us around the beginning of the year. They don't recommend using their Neon retainers on our head.

I have them. Why won't the Neon ones fit? They are just valve retainers and have nothing to do with the way the head is turned. I also think they have the same part number.

I talked to Crane and did a little investigation of my own. The stock part number is identicle. There is something to do with the way Crane made their retainers that it might cause a problem. The difference in the head is install height. Neon is 1.525" Eclipse is 1.496".

I also talker to Crower and their design is okay for both.

I suspect Crane's retainers for the Neon would be fine until you start to run really high lift cams, then their may be clearance issues. But this is just a speculation, i have no facts to back that up.

So it is like getting a free .029" of lift? Cool! That makes it easier for us cheapasses who are too lame to spend money on Billet cams and just have a set of regrinds blown out for 200 bux/set...
cool
