I have searched and have found a writeup for fuel filter replacement, but it was for the 97-99. Is this the same for the 96 or does the 96 have the same thing as the 95?

the 95s and (i think?) some 96 cars have the fuel filter in the engine bay, below the brake fluid thingy on the firewall. in later models, they are located by the fuel tank on the drivers side. i think you just have to visually inspect it to see wich one your car has. theres a write up somwhere in this forum for the firewall-mouted ones, but i dont have a link.

^^^egggghhhhh dont wanna be an ass, but the 95 fuel filter, and some 96s are located in the engine bay, by the rear motor mount...
97-99 are located at the PASSENGER side rear wheel, actually, a lil in front of the rear tire.... just get down there, and check...cross your fingers tho, the one in the engine bay is a bitch to get to... gotta remove a buncha shiot... if its in the engine bay, u may wanna invest in some motor mount inserts if you havent already... it will be chillen, and cost less than $30 shipped to your door from summitracing.com..

good luck bro.. u will have to releive the fuel system's pressure...so watch your eyes..

sorry, i meant passengers side. brain fart.

mine (95) was on the firewall and wasnt really that bad to change. the hardest part was loosening the banjo bolt. if yours is in the engine bay, thats a good time to remove and clean the throttle body, do the "free airbox mod", do any EGR mods, and possibly remove/clean the intake manifold. thats what i did while it was all taken apart.

BTW, i didnt releave fuel pressure because...well..i forgot, and there wasnt a lot of fuel that came out. maby about 6-8 ozs at most. it didnt spray everywhere either, just kind leaked out. make sure to put a shop rag under the filter while you are working on it.

Yeah, Im going to relieve the residual pressure - i guess that is a gang connector under the back seat under the silver cover thing. I don't need gas all over the place :D

If its by the rear passenger tire, where exactly would it be? I've got a later model 96 that I haven't been able to find the damn filter on either.

Okay....since the weather was a little warmer today (45 with light wind) I finally got off my ass and swapped the filter. It was no piece of cake (well, the actual work was easy...)

After going to the local Checker Auto Parts for the past month and a half checking to see if they have my filter in stock yet, I just decide to have them order it. Two days later, I have it.

I see right away that my shitty little tool collection doesn't have the wrenches required for the job (19 mm, or 3/4" will do). I go to pop's house to get the wrenches. Now that I have those, I start going after the little bugger (the original part had 99,700 miles on it!). Once it's loose, it starts dripping gas. And dripping. AND dripping. (will it stop?) Finally I grab an 8 ounce cup to catch the gas so it doesn't just leak all over the ground. Oh yeah, It gets filled. (Mind you, I DID relieve the residual pressure).

Okay, both sides are undone, going after the bracket. It comes off just fine. Hmmm. The original part seems a bit smaller than this one that I ordered from Checker....

The bracket is way too small for the replacement filter, but it still hangs onto it pretty well so I decide to just try to use it anyway. I get it all the way on there last bolt....TOO SMALL???? They ordered me the wrong part.

I take the part back, get a little resistance from Checker before I get my $ back. I go to 2 more auto parts stores, none of them have the right filter that I need. It is the right part # by the book and computer, but the bolt is just too small for all of them. The last parts store tells me to check with a dealer. (I'm like, FUCK that.) I decide to give one last parts store a shot. Turns out that they were the only one with any kind of a brain. They look up the 97 filter. IT FITS!


Morale of the story: check your car's build date before looking for a filter if you have a 96!!!! I have the late model and it only will take the 97-99 filter.

EDIT: I should have known that the friggin filter would be the 97-99 filter since it is back by the passenger wheel, but fuck, I have a 96, and they didn't ask me the build date at ANY of the parts stores...
