35935, Downside to 60MM throttle body?? Posted by 97_ESi, Oct-28-02 01:00 PM
I was talking to a guy about doing the 60mm throttle body to my car but he said it really isn't worth it for the gas mileage loss I'm gonna be seeing. Is the change gonna really be that big? Or will I hardly notice a difference?

I can't imagine how the throttle body will hurt your mileage. I would think that it might help. I'm sure the biggest problem withmileage would be trying to stay off of the pedal:P With your mods, the difference in power should be quite noticeable. just ask the guys with jeep throttle bodys (metal jim ect...) IMO

it's bigger, it'll add oh maybe an extra pound to your car.

I havent really noticed a difference in how often Im putting gas in my car so gas mileage couldnt have gone down but so much. It will go down though, your now ingesting more air and the PCM has to compensate w/ more fuel. In all honesty though it gives torque and hp increases that are just great.
Also on a side note, I saw a talon yesterday that was the same color as yours and it isnt like my color. Yours doesnt have any purple in it, I like it though.

Yeah its weird - I wonder if Chrysler just based the color of the Eclipse or what - in pictures they always look different - there's just a different shade or something to the Talon - oh well.
You still gonna be making those jeep t/b's in springtime? Thats gonna be on the top of my mod list for spring anyways....might have to get instructions from you guys if you still aren't making em :)

Im quite sure that we will, it seems as if there are a lot of people trying to get their money right so they can get one of our TB set ups

I am still very interested in making this purchase, but probably wont be able to until January or Feb. I would hope that you would still be doing this then! Hint Hint...

ultimately what makes your mileage go down is how much you stomp on the pedal :P When I went from NA to turbo my mileage didn't go down. Well its a little worse now since the engine is wearing out.

in my opinion the downsides to a 60mm TB would be
A. if you go with the jeep TB you have to custom fab it to get it to fit on and get your sensors to fit in it
B. if you buy the one being offered through ebay and the board you have to pay $210. that's alot.
given the choice i'd buy it though. much easier to save a paycheck and get the 60mm TB being offered on the board than to have to find a jeep TB and then cut it up to make it fit.
gas mileage would be better in my opinion. you can only use 2.0 liters of air+fuel . if you add more air then you have less room for fuel.

Gas mileage would definitely be better. Don't listen to everything everyone says, i was told by my mechanic to not go with aftermarket spark plug wires, beacuse they can damage your ECU. Anything that opens up the intake system IMO will increase gas mileage, hence why you get better gas mileage for intake systems. But, even if for some ungodly reason it were to lower your gas mileage, it wouldn't be noticable. If you think 1-2 mpg is bad, get a turbo, then you have to pay $1.79 for 93 octane and get 20mpg. :). I'm not trying to bitch, i'm just stating the facts. I would go for it!

HA! (I am not a person who flames, and i am not starting now, so PLEASE don't take this the wrong way). So without naming anyone: I now get 35 to 40MPG boosting 8-10PSI, granted I am on the freeway quite often. So that crack about turboing will get you 20mpg is B.S. Everyone else who is saying that you will see a slight decrease in gas milage when opening up the throttle body is correct. I don't care if it's a TB Spacer, or bigger diameter, I don't even care what car we are talking about, when you put more air into your engine you are going to be sucking down more gas. The statement that was made that "there would be less room for gas if there is more air." You have to realize that it isn't that gas and air are fighting to be going down a tube together or anything, it is an air and fuel mixture that needs to be in a fairly tight ratio with eachother in order for your motor to produce the spark it needs in order to cumbust. If your car has way more fuel then air, then there isn't the right amount of oxygen for your car to make that spark it needs to run effectivly and effecient, and vis-versa.

How the hell do you manage 35-40mpg at 8-10psi? Have you upgraded your injectors yet??? When my car was at its peak non turbo, i could barely get 33mpg, now i get 340 miles out of 15.9 gallons, which is about 21 mpg.
Anyone is welcome to back me up.

i'm non-turbo, and with my mods my MPG have jumped dramatically---i get 41-42mpg highway and 27-30 city....

35949, RE: Downside to 60MM throttle body?? Posted by 98RsT, Oct-30-02 03:59 PM
I really don't remember what my MPG was non-turbo. But no, i havn't messed with my injectors yet, i am running the star stage 2 basically the way it came out of the box, oh and opened up the exhaust to have an even 2.75" all the way down thru the muffler. And per tank i can get 420 to 460mi if i let it go till the gas light comes on (usually takes 11.8 gallons +/- .3 gal).... That doesn't happen often because i don't want to have to replace the fuel pump if the tank gets too dry. However you have to keep in mind that i am on the freeway for 110 mi a day that may have an effect on my mileage.

>if you add more air then you have >less room for fuel.
sorry bro, but this is totally wrong...your ecu sees how much air is coming in and adjusts to send the correct amount of fuel in. this is why people get S-AFC's to be able to adjust the amount of air/fuel.

Justin-- what'd you notice with your throttle body?

In general the more power you make the more fuel that is needed. It may not be a noticable amount but you will get lower miles per gallon. The TB will allow more air to enter the engine so the computer will adjust with more fuel, however this is only a noticible amount at or near WOT so you will notice it even less or not at all if you don't beat on the car most of the time.
