3585, can someone tell me a few things about head gaskets. . . Posted by Fast420A, Jun-16-01 07:03 PM
What is the thickness of the stock one and what is the thinnest head gasket you could run NA to increase compression ratio. I basically want to tap this engine for as much power as I can get out of it NA and then I am going to add a 50 to 75 shot on top of that. I will be getting cams, valves, valves springs, tit. retainers, cam gears, 3 or 5 angle valve job, ported and milled head and AFX ECU if it exists. Then I will start to work on the bottom end with high comp pistons, big rods, lightened and balanced crank. Will the Clevite Bearings that howell sells for the Neons work with our rods and crank bearings? So much to do and so little funds to do it with.

Stock thickness for the head gasket is .20, but if you want to raise your compresion, the best way is upgrade your internals. The olny other way is to not use a "thinner" gasket but to have your head shaved. This however posses a problem with timing and you would have a problem getting your cam gears to align right when settingthe timing belt. Go for upgrades or just wait is my opinion. C-YA!!!!!!!!

U can get a .022" copper HG for $100 from http://www.headgasket.com. You will need to mill the head and make sure the deck is true because that gasket is paper thin and ARP studs should be used. Yes Howwells bearing will work as the the 420 2L blocks are exaclty the same, save for the compression. I would also say port the sh!t outta your head and get try their dirt cheap Eagle rods and 12.5:1C pistons.

Will that still be a safe, streetable motor because this is my daily driver? I don't want the comp to be too high and cause problems.
