35690, Sound coming from tranny at idle.

Ok here is what is happening. When I start up the car in the morning it doesnt make any sounds untill about 10 seconds go by. Then I start to hear a clanking sound from the tranny. It started doign this after my first rebuild with my stock clutch in there. Then I got the CM stage 4 and it got worse. When I press the clutch the sound goes away. The clutch came with a new TO bearing so it isnt that. It is a very annoying sound and I want to get rid of it. And havign a lumpy idle doesnt help the sound situation either. Has anyone else ran into this problem? Could it be another bearing somewhere in there? I know it is nt the clutch because it did it before I got the cm stage 4. But since the CM stage 4 it has gotten worse. HELP!!! I am embarassed to go through drive throughs because my car sounds liek the engine is all fucked up when I dont press the clutch.

I had a very similar problem in my RS after replacing my tranny. I put a new clutch in and same thing. Also, if I ran it hard, up higher in the RPMS, it would also make that noise but much louder! I actually eventually decided it was probably the driver side motor mount broke and was rattling like mad at certain RPMS (idle and higher rpms). It must have broke on removal of the tranny. :P Same thing as you also, would stop when I pushed the clutch in. Anyways, I never fixed it, I traded it, so I dont know if that was actually the problem, but I'm pretty sure.. I put my ear to the fender and could here it very clearly... I dont know if this has anything to do with your problem, but thought I'd throw it out there....

well, you know where i stand with transmissions.... i hate them... hehe. From what your saying, i cant give you much helpful info cause i am not there to diagnose the prob, but heres my 2 cents worth... my clutch was slipping and coming back in with the CFDF at high HP... I replaced the clutch with a CM stg 4 and quaife... causing a lot more strain on the drivetrain... started hearing noises from my tranny, got worst, then it added in pulling forward in neutral ever so slightly... pulled the tranny, took it to a local shop, "brad, your trannys fuct" is what i got back, haha... 3rd gear bearing welded itself to the shaft and was actually in gear all the time or someshit... thats why it would slightly pull forward every few seconds...

p.s. my first clutch, the CFDF was 5000 miles old when it was replace with the CM STG 4, I gave the clutch away to one of you guys on the board, so whoever it was, sorry i forget shit easily, you just got yourself a free perfectly good clutch, because its the rear main seal leaking thats causing the clutch to slip :-(

My Quaife/CM 4 setup makes noises too. Always has, although it seems to be quieter lately. <shrugs>

The dealer replaced my main-shaft seal on my tranny(also had them throw in a new clutch at the same time) but they did'nt bother to replace the axle shaft seals in the process, so I lost all fluid after about 20 mi. So they decided just to fill it up with fluid again and let it go. It started to make alot of grinding & scratching noise, sounded like shit getting tossed around in there. so they droped in a reman which was quiet for a while but now the same shit. So after talking to alot of experts, They informed me that if you push in on the clutch and the sound goes away that means you have a bad main-shaft bearing. I always thought it was the opposite. Anyway, you cannot replace just the bearing, you must replace the entire shaft with gears because they were not designed to be taken apart, Which sell for around $1700 a pop. I can buy a few used 5 sp for that much. I will not rule out the throwout bearing intill I replace it and inspect the pressure plate. Not saying this is your problem, but you should'nt rule it out either. You're probably a pro at pulling 2gnt trannys by now, so mabye you should try a new throwout bearing for starters, then go from there. I hope you have better luck then I

Supp Brad,

That was me that you gave the clutch to... don't worry, I won't forget it.... I got a few little projects that I'm working on, and I'll hook you up when it allcomes together....

The clutch is running fine... it slipped on me once goin up a mountain a few days after install, since then I tryed to make it slip under load, and it refuses too....lol

Same shit happened to my last tranny.... previous owner put in gear oil, welded the 3rd gear to the shaft.... pulled forward in neautral... same exact shiznit....lol

Not to everyone, go check you tranny fluid right now!!!!

If anyone needs one, I can get 5 spd trannys REAL cheap....
