35648, SRT-4 engine swap? Posted by NySpeed, Oct-24-02 04:47 AM
Hey guys, just got the new Sport Compact Car (December 2002). Do you think an engine swap with the new Neon SRT-4 engine will be possible? Sorry if this was brought up before, I tried searching the archives and came up with nothing. Thanks.

the car is too new to have had any swap info for it, yes it is possible, but as everyone will tell you, it will cost a hella penny. besides the engine/trans, you would need custom motor mounts, new ecu and other electronic components. just build your bottom end, and go with hahns turbo kit, or star. and im sure that it will cost a fraction of the neon swap, and youll be alot quicker later chris

EDIT: Actually from seeing the post.. Looks like intake is in the rear, and exhaust in the front.. hmm.. it could work, just like anything else :-) .. but the people did say it would cost alot.
From before seeing the picture: Yeah you can, but IMO it would be a real waste..
You can't use the head, nor the turbo system, because the head is reversed (intake front, exhaust rear) from ours.
If you want, you can get one from a Caravan or any Chrysler car with a 2.4L, it would be like the same thing.. of course, without the turbo.
It would be hard to find too, the cheapest, and really only way to get a motor is from a totalled Neon, and it'd be hella hard to find one.
So, you would have to change the motor mounts, ecu, I think some of the brackets, MAYBE tranny, and MAYBE axles.
I hope that helped...

The only useful things from an SRT4 would be the pistons and possibly the intercooler.
Unless you want to go backwards really fast, or have a cool idea for installing the motor upside-down.
Edit: those are fuel injectors in the front manifold... so unless this thing has afterburners.... hehehehe

Here's some more pics. The engine is out of the car, so thought it might be a little easier to see everything. The turbos are incredibly small as is the fuel rail!!

WTF? Last picture - Is that exhaust Tee'd into the turbine AND the downpipe? Wow... that is a seriously tiny turbo if it only needs 1/2 the exhaust energy... odd. I guess that makes it easy to turn it into a twin turbo ;)

could we use that valve cover? that would be pretty cool to have a 2.4L turbo valve cover if you have a 2.4L swap with turbo of course.

Can't be done..
The bottom end is totally different and it uses a different trigger wheel than ours.
The turbo is a mitsu td05-16g, except it's packaged in a special manifold.
The car runs a stock boost range of 10-14psi depending on atmospheric conditions.
It utilizes a 2.25 bar map (33psi max)
There was an ASK the PVO techs session on dodge.com last night.. i got a few questions in ;-)
If you want a 2.4L, get a 96-99 engine..

the new srt motor really isn't any better then the other 2.4 motors me and few others are swapping, (srt)the pistons and rods are made weakly have to be upgraded etc, after u pay the 3500$ for the motor or the high price and u have to rebuild it anyways why?
the 2.4 stratus caravan motor or the pt cruisar engine is much more suitable... u use our 2.0dohc head and the rest of the info u need to do the swap is on here and neons.org
the srt tranny maybe somthing to lookinto though if it can be upgrade like a 4g63's tranny we'd need custom axles but may be worth it if the tranny has any cool options...

I told everyone over a month ago about how small that turbo was! Wasn't kidding, was I?

Will a hahn or star turbo kit bolt onto a 2.4 caravan or pt engine? Can they take it?

what about swapping the engine from the turbo pt cruiser? I know there have been sucessful swaps/transplants with the 2.4l. it not be that different with turbo pt cruiser. For me personally i'd rather just buy a tried and true turbo kit. than to spend $$$ on implanting another engine, making custom brackets etc.. but my $0.02.

I guess A853 is the mexican motor code? It says in the article "The engine is new and it's based on the 2.4-liter turbo the company has been selling in the Mexican market."

the only differeneces in the 2.0 and 2.4 motor is about 1" in deck height the rest of the differences in the motors dont mater to a turbo kit yes a hahn stage 1-5 will bolt up
there aren't that many things to fix ona 2.4 swap really if u research it pretty simple.
the pt 2.4 is basically the same minor differences as the other 2.4's the pt has wimpy rods and weak pistons
