WOHOO! Did the stratus final drive swap in under an hour, and its totally worth it. It's the best bang for your buck that I've done. This car pulls like a mad-man now. Thanx to all who did write ups on this mod.

Thats good to hear. Few question i got:
-whered you get the new gears from? price? -how hard was it? -did you need a steering wheel puller to get the gears off?
|
35291, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by The1Bill, Oct-20-02 02:57 AM
Relatively easy mod. I highly recommend it. Yes, you do need to rent (or buy) a steering wheel puller. Auto parts stores will usually rent them out. You pay for them and get all of your money back when you bring the tool back. Just make sure that you have the enormous sockets that you need. You will need a 32MM (same as the crown nut on the end of the axle) and some cars need a 1 1/2" socket. This is a bit tough to find, but Sears stocks them. Just remember to get the adapter, as it is 3/4" drive and I doubt you are using a torque wrench with 3/4" drive... -=B-=

Thats great! And I think I've asked this question 100 times and got no answer.....................Where the hell do you guys get your gears from, and how much did they cost???
Please let me know. I'm about to bust a nut for this mod.

And I'm sure its been answered 100 times too :) , the readme on the howto for the gears has the place to order them from. Nonetheless you can also get them from ANY Chrysler dealership - just walk in and say you need 99 Stratus (2.0 liter engine) drive gears. The how-to-install page also has the part number.

I just looked again and still didn't see where anyone said where they got theirs at. Maybe I'm blind. All I've seen was to seach for some dude's name cause he use to sell them, but I don't even remember who that guy was.
I also tried the dealer but those stupid fucks didn't know what the hell gears I was talking about and when they looked up the part number it came up as an invalid number. I thought they were just fucking with me but I looked at their computer and thats what it said.
It's almost like Baby Jesus doesn't want me to have this cause I might like it to much.

$200 bucks Canadian.....hahah bet that helps :D
No horse power.....it changes the gear ratio ;) You'll notice the difference, best mod I've done so far and well worth the money.

35301, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by bigbrent88, Oct-20-02 02:32 PM
Its not changing the Hp, but what it is doing is transmitting more Tq to the wheels do to the gearing. My guess is (if its true that it knocks .5 seconds of your 1/4) that the wheels feel ~40-60lb/ft more then stock but thats just a guess.

Hey guys,
Yup. Bill helped me do this mod for my car (thanks again Bill!), and I must say I've definitely noticed a big difference. The car pulls lot harder now when accelerating. Now I can't wait to get my UDP put on...(hehe Bill)
I don't have the info anymore on how to buy the gears, but it's on the forum somewhere. The guy's name is Bob Kise and the gears were about $94 including shipping.
I just want to point out that the link to the final gear mod given earlier is a little outdated. The newest info with the most updated installation procedures (from the friendly folks at asog) is at:
http://www.rhinehart.net/Robsgear.htm
Check out their site; it also has installation procedures for the Transgo shift kit and many others.
Good luck!

35305, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by mcgyvr, Oct-21-02 05:06 AM
top speed for me isnt a problem, maybe instead of topping out at 130 you will top out at 120 or so, so who cares about top end
you will lose approx 6% gas mileage adn the speedo is off approx 5mph at 60 so it will say 65 when your doing 60 no biggie either
the mod is great

35306, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by 9D9 MITSU RS, Oct-21-02 11:01 AM
can u make the speedometer read right? or who can do it? the dealer told me they can't. I think that's BS

35307, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by EvuLFleA, Oct-21-02 11:13 AM
Anyone actually been to the track with this yet?
I guess I can take people's words and just go spend $100 but it's cold out and I don't feel like doing something that won't put a smile on my face.
|
35308, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by WIKKI, Oct-21-02 12:06 PM
It will make you smile! I paid $125 for the gears at the chrysler dealership (part number is 4773275) you can get them cheaper anywhere online. I just didn't want to hassle with freight. you do lose about 5 mph when going 60 and it is a little annoying. I have been told that the dealership can update your speedometer to adjust for smaller tires. the dealer uses DRB-3 scan tool to set tire size. But.... they don't call them Satan for nothing. Watch out for wet roads. I can peel out through the first two and most of third gear, and if you stomp on it on a freeway offramp you can lose a little traction.

35309, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by EvMan2345, Oct-21-02 01:48 PM
Does this mess up the odometer at all? i mean if its miscalculating your speed, does that have an effect on how many miles you are actually traveling, as opposed to how many miles your car thinks your traveling?

35310, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by fadegs, Oct-21-02 03:23 PM
I'll be damned...
That never even occured to me...That's a very good question. My understanding is that the odometer register distances depending on the gear ratio...so if we were to change it...
Hrm, can someone shed some light on this issue?

im really interested in this mod as well, but I am skeptic about the odometer/speedo deal. I wouldnt like the fact of knowing your off by 5mph, pretty much says your gonna get a ticket sooner or later.

35312, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by WIKKI, Oct-21-02 05:30 PM
I am definately going to show more miles driven than what the car has actually travelled. It really doesn't bother me that much because i don't plan on selling this car before it's value has dropped from old age.
Anyone that has had their speedo recalibrated PLEASE! post and tell us WHO,WHEN, WHERE and HOW MUCH!
|
35313, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by The1Bill, Oct-21-02 07:38 PM
Yeah, you will rack up miles 6% faster. And no, you aren't fixin' yourself for a ticket, as your speedometer will read higher then you are going by, yup 6%. That number seems to come up a lot on this topic. Jeff, I think that this mod will definately put a smile on your face. It put a smile on my face, and it wasn't even my car! -=B-=

35314, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by mcgyvr, Oct-22-02 12:41 AM
your speedo is effected run off gearing, You odometer is not from what I understand
and Im telling everyone again ANYONE WITH A DRB3 TOOL CAN RESET THE PINION ANGLE IN THE TCM TO OFFSET THE SPEEDO ISSUE.
If your worried about it you dont need to do this mod plain and simple you gotta pay if you want to play
Just like with a turbo, yes you get all this newfound power but you will loose gas milage (Who the F cares)

35315, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by Corbin, Oct-22-02 03:38 AM
The TCU gets the speed signal from the output speed sensor on the tranny. The transfer gears that you are swapping are after the output speed sensor. So the wheels are spinning faster than the TCU expects them to, based on the output speed sensor's readings. The TCU has no way of knowing the actual wheel speed, so it functions as normal, sending the speed signal to the ECU. The ECU interprets this and outputs a signal to the speedometer and odometer. So, your speedometer will read high and the odometer will increase at a higher rate.
And I called every dealer in my area. ALL of them either refuse to recal my ECU or deny that it can be done. This may have something to do with me having a '95...don't know. So, I just drive a few percent faster.

my dealer by me (dodge) told me its 25 bucks for them to fix the speedo
the speedo problem is probably just like the pep boys nazi thread they can do it but they dont want the reprocussions if it fails and then you come blame them saying it was their fault etc.. If you have a 95 that might be why no one will do it for you

35317, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by 9D9 MITSU RS, Oct-22-02 07:27 AM
so, they don't modify the gear itself, but they basically program ur ecu for smaller tires? Also, will this be reset and lost everytime the battery is disconnected, etc??? So many questions. I have been asking forever. If someone would let me in on some answers, I might be able to get the gears for a better price. My dad owns an auto tranny shop and can get most shit wholesale. :)

35318, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by mcgyvr, Oct-22-02 08:06 AM
>so, they don't modify the gear itself, but they basically >program ur ecu for smaller tires?
Correct you would tell them to set the pinion angle for a 15" tire I have the exact setting but ASOG is down so I cant get to my PM's
Also, will this be reset >and lost everytime the battery is disconnected, etc??? No, its a set value that remains even after the battery has been disconnected, its just a standard value that stays flashed into the TCM and will remain, just like the value for shift length etc..
So >many questions. I have been asking forever. If someone would >let me in on some answers, I might be able to get the gears >for a better price. My dad owns an auto tranny shop and can >get most shit wholesale. :)
I hoped that helped and if you can beat the 86 bucks that bob kise (forum dodge) wants do it man, there are still many people who want to get in on this mod

35319, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by Boofer97rs, Oct-22-02 12:33 PM
i have 215/45/17 tires. would there be some way of finding out what i should have the dealer set the pinion angle to, to get the closest to the actual speed?
|
35320, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by 9D9 MITSU RS, Oct-22-02 12:41 PM
Not sure if we can beat $86, but I can see what I can get it for. Probably not that cheap tho. Also, any turbo'd ATs got this? I was wondering- would this be geared too high for a turbo car, ie would it be better to leave gears stock for turbo. You know, you don't really need closer gears if u have a lot of power. Sometimes the gearing and power won't match up and the car won't be fast up high. It'll accelerate fast and just die. Anyone turbo have this? Any difference? better or worse?

35322, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by Corbin, Oct-25-02 03:05 AM
This is just as viable a mod on a NT AT as a Turbo AT. Both of us need help getting off the line. This does not make the gears any "closer". It just makes gives you lower overall gearing in every gear (higher ratio). I still get good mileage (26-28 mpg mixed city/highway). Speedo is off, but its nothing major. This is a very good mod. Its cheap, has definite results, and minor cons.

Ok, I remounted the tranny cooler in front of the a/c condinser and I'm ready to hook up the lines. Which line is the one that goes back into the tranny? Is it the one closest to the engine of closest to the wheel? I need to know this so I can put me shit back together.

35324, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by 1998EclipseRS, Oct-26-02 04:09 PM
Okay, I'm really worried about the mileage issue on my car. If I reset the speedo, will that fix the odometer too? I think this mod sounds great, but I want to make sure all I'm loosing is gas milege... Not my odometer!
TIA!

35325, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by soldier101, Oct-26-02 05:16 PM
your odometer wont be "lost" per say, just running on adrenalin all the time (goin faster) of course, if you eventually turbo, then blow the motor, the odo will be wrong for the motor any how :P
think of it this way, youll change your oil more, and the motor will be happier haha

35326, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by 1998EclipseRS, Oct-27-02 04:18 AM
Yeah, I guess it won't be off by that much....
But will reseting the speedo fix the problem?

by resetting it you mean flashing it by the dealer? .. he a good flash would reset me just fine ..j/k ok seriously can they do this? or can we some how modify something from the stratus? ecu tcu? anything?
|
35328, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by soldier101, Oct-27-02 07:22 AM
they both run off the same sensor right? so maybe?
|
35329, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by Corbin, Oct-27-02 11:43 AM
If you electronically modify the speed signal running from the TCU to the ECU, then your speedo and odom should be OK. You "should" be able to do this with an SGI-5 from Dakota digital (dakotadigital.com). Or try to get the dealer to modify the tire size in your ECU. I used to be really concerned about fixing my speed signal, but I don't care now. It'll probably keep me out of trouble.

35331, RE: stratus final drive! Posted by 1998EclipseRS, Oct-29-02 02:32 AM
I don't know bout the MPH being a big deal, I can live with that. I want an accurate odometer though. If I can fix the odometer, then I will do the mod. I need to find someone who will reset the TCU for me. That might be tricky, my brother used to work at the local Nissan store, my car has its warrantee there so if I go there and they find out I'm putting diffrent gears in my car... I'm sure the warantee is pretty much VOID. someone tell me about this Dakota Digital thing... Maybe it will save my ass.
Thanks- Chip
