35231, Heat Shield Removal.. Posted by tacoman123, Oct-19-02 06:55 AM
I have a 95 ESi.. Just wondering.. Can I remove the heat shield on the hood? The aluminum foil-like covering looks cheap and crappy.. so I was just wondering what would happen if I remove it..
Thanks

It's not a heat shield. It's a fire blanket. If you have a fire then the plastic "hooks" melt and the blanket falls on the engine.

uhhhhh, dude... mine came with metal hooks, not the plastic push pin type things... guess I am screwed, then... I always thought it was a heat shield. -=B-=

I thought the material melts and just falls down and suffocates the fire.

It looks like a piece of card board, with aluminum foil wrapped around it.. :-)
Can I just install a fire extinguisher system? Like those overhead sprinklers :-)
Thanks for all the replies..
But what does everyone else have?..
Can you post some pics?
Thanks

I got rid of the stock 2gnt "blanket" and replaced it with a stock turbo heat shield. It has the same mounting locations as the GS-T's. You might need to buy some new push-in plastic tabs to lock it in.

a fire extinguisher system can run expensive. if u were serious. I think they range like 500-1500.

My car is a 98, and has no foil type deal, but its just that blanket type. Matt_95tgs's car is a 95 and has the shiny foil type one on his car..both look the same and mount the same, one just looks diff than the other. I always thought it was for keeping extreme engine temps from baking/melting the hood paint...more of an insulator really..
