34763, Resonator?? Posted by TKI, Oct-13-02 10:44 PM
Has anyone on here removed their resonator?? Does it harm anything to do that, and if not, does it make it any louder at all??
I had thought about taking mine off, but I didn't know if the car needed it for any reason.
Thanks for any help on the matter.

i believe we have more than 1 resonator, 2 possibly. i took the resonators off my car and it made a world of difference. the resonators are basically just mufflers. i dont think it affected the performance for good or bad, it made my car twice as loud.

I took both my resonators off when I had my old exhaust. It made my car so loud that I hated it. It had some nasty highway drone too.

Really, where are they and how do you take them off? I'm not sure how resonators work, can you just take them off and then bada-boom, your car is louder? I like a little "loudness" sometimes, you probably have to weld straight pipe where the resonators were huh... its probably not free and I have no money so I better not get my hopes up. but if you could tell me whats involved I'll give positive feedback.

you have to cut them off and have a new pipe welded on

Yeah, you have to cut them off and get new pipe welded. And with my experience, it wasn't just a little louder, it was A LOT louder. I guess it didn't help that I had a Hayame muffler on there.

Two of them???
When mine was on the lift having the perf. muffler put on I only seen one right after the converter.
Where is the other one at???
BTW, mine is a '95!!!

everyone that iv seen, including my friends 98 only has 1 right after the cat. i had often thought about doing this, but if it makes it 2x louder, i dunno if i want to do that....i already have trouble passing inspection as it is for exhaust noise!!

I would suggest removing the cat instead of the resonator. The type of resonator we have on our cars isn't really one that restricts airflow. It actually is designed to bounce the sound waves into each other for a canceling effect. Basically removing it will make your car alot louder and thats it. Removing the cat, or gutting it will also make your car louder but you will see noticeable performance gains from about the middle of 3rd all the way up.

it also makes a nice rattle with the stock muffler. eish, nasty sound.
