34653, Belts.....
Posted by sonikbewm, Oct-12-02 02:21 AM
I posted awhile ago about having problems with my ps/ac belt flying off when I'm racing. I have put the new pulley and bracket from Satan on and everything is lined up perfectly and it is still throwing this damn belt. Does anyone have any other suggestions to this matter? I could be off by a lot but could this be from my engine torquing a lot when I shift? And could motor mount inserts solve this? TIA

if i had any money id bet that your crankshaft pully is wobbling. with the lower plastic cover part off (the one behind the passengers wheel), look at the belt between the crankshaft and the a/c compressor while the car is running. does the belt look like its flapping around a bit in this area?

If it isn't ^^^ I would think that your pulleys are glazed a little. I would get some brake kleen or something and take your belts off and clean all the grooves really well. Then I would get some croakas(sp) cloth and sand it down a little with that. It should make nice little scuff marks but not enough to take the finish off the pulley.

You could check a couple of things. Re-torque your crankshaft pulley. If it is not securely tight, it will loosen the belts. Check the conditions of your tension pulleys. Also check that you tighten the belts enough.

Def check the crank pulley, and def check the tensioner pulley. With the belt off, try and wiggle the tensoiner pulley side to side, and if there is lots of play in it, that can throw your belts. Oh, and its not a cheap part, only place that i have found that has them is the dealer, about 120 bucks or around there. Someone had found replacement bearings to put in there for really cheap, the thread was quite some time ago, you may be able to find it by searching...

Thanks for all the replies. I think all of the pulley's have been replaced by now. The belt only gets thrown when I shift hard to 2nd from 1st. I will definately check all the pulleys again when the belt comes off next time and I may try out the 4 ribbed belt instead of the 5. I'm open to any other possible fixes for this as well.

don't shift as hard from 1st to 2nd :D hehe.. or maybe at a slightly lower RPM.
