34415, Gas smell with no visible leaks....help
Posted by Kirby, Oct-08-02 02:11 AM
Is it possible to get a stinky batch of gas? I smell gas really bad but I can't find any leaks at the pump or fuel rail. I have not checked the filter yet but it does not seem to be comming from the filter aera. What should I do?

Ok guy's I got a cel and the smell got worse. The codes I have are 12, 42,42,42,55 I have code 42 3 times there are 3 seperate meanings for the code in the book. #1. MFI relay (ASD relay)control circut. #2. No MFI relay (ASD relay) output voltage at PCM. #3. Fuel pump relay control circut. What should I hunt down first guy's?

Hey, I usually get a stinky batch of gass everytime i eat these cheap burritos from albertsons. Man that stuff is bad. Seriously though, i get that smell from time to time. No cel though... Let me know what you find out. Check for a possible exhaust leak, a bad CAT, maybe the Orings on the injectors... You know, the usual suspects....

You need to replace the ASD relay, its shot, which would also cause a problem with the fuel pump relay, I believe the ASD if broken will cause the fp relay to not function either. Its on the drivers side firewall, replace that sucker

Could a relay cause the gas smell? I'm thinking that a simple relay couldn't cause gas to leak out or even fumes for that matter. Am I correct? I will replace the relay's but do I still need to look for a fuel leak somewhere?

well if the relay is bad, then your car shouldn't run at all. check the relay and make sure it's in there securely. before my car warms up fully, there is a slight smell of gas in the exhaust(you can smell it while backing up). does your car run any differently since the small and the cel?

If it is the ASD relay, it's only about $13 at the dealer.

That's normal when you have been monkeying around installing fuel pumps, etc. Mine does it evey now and again. It'll pass, or you'll find a leak. I've enver found a leak, hoewever, just for the record.

Kirby - gimme a call. I missed your call the other day, but got your voicemail. it'll be quick - basically the symptoms are the same either way and you'll have to take the head off to really find out.

Well my brothers I found me a leak... :( It appears my f&%#ing test port with the fuel pressure sender connected is about ready to snap off. I need to find a fuel rail and quick so it's yard work for me tomorrow. (but if anybody has one let me know) gosh darn car all of a sudden it want's to fall apart on me... :rolleyes

And Dino I'll prolly be calling you for some fuel rail help tomorrow anyway and we'll chat.

I have smell gas when mine is running too, but I just bought my '95 about 2 weeks ago, and I thought that I might have been weird about it.

How did you check to see if it was the fuel rail, and I will check mine?

Just go ahead and look at the fuel rail while the car is running. You will see where it's wet unless it's on the underside of the rail. I think mine broke because my fuel pressure sending unit is on a 90 degree angled flange and the vibration from my warped rotors caused it to break the test port.

Also the check engine light went out then came back with the same codes. My car is running richer now too. Do you guy's think the relay is causing my car to run in safemode and dump extra fuel? Or do you think I only got the codes again because they were stored in the cpu?
