34316, Oil pan question (2.4 related)...............
Posted by Total Eclipse, Oct-07-02 06:01 AM
Ok, so im going to drop off my 2.4 to get it machinied and what not this weekend, and need to know how much I need to get taken out of the middle of the oil pan to get it to fit, as I dont want to mess with getting a cut-out made to fit over the cross-member. TIA

You'll have to have a cut out made. Your best bet would be to get the block in the car, then mark your clearances.

Im not going to go about it that way. What i want to do is just shorten the oil pan, since i dont need the extra space that will be created when i remove the balance shafts, and it will be much easier and cheaper that way. All i really need to know is what is the difference in depth between our pan and the 2.4 pan so i can have that amount cut out from the middle of the pan and re-welded together to get it to fit.

Will your oil-pickup still work if you shorten the entire pan by an inch or so (the difference is something like that)? I was pondering the same route you wish to take.

Now, I am not sure that it will actually clear the crossmember. It does look like it will if you cut the rib and the boltholes off. You will want something more substantial then a dremel, though.

You might be surprised what you can cut with a dremel and a heavy duty cutting disc. We've cut shocks off with them. Not neccessarily the fastest way, but possible.

Either way figure it out and let me know the details of what needs to be done.

I know that you **can** cut anything with a dremel and a heavy duty cutoff disk. I used one to remove my catcon! But even the hacksaw took a long time on this. It is a pretty heavy duty aluminum...
