34165, exhuast is defening...help!
Posted by Twiste, Oct-05-02 03:49 PM
I need to find a way to make my exhaust less loud :-( Ive been pulled over for it once already and it hasnt even been on a week yet. It is a major love call out to all the cops in my town. I have a header, high flow cat, and cat back. It is all 2.5" and is way too freaking loud. Anyone have any suggestions on making it more quiet? Ive just been thinking about hacking off the muffler that is on there and putting on one with a silencer. TIA!

It could also be the way you drive. I have the same set up and I don't have a silencer, cops don't mind me and my neighbors actually like it :wary. I jus sorta don't get on it as much so i don't attract attention unless i wanna ;). Just lay off the gas and cruise instead of flying. Or you could get a silenced muffler.

Ok here is what i do. When you see a cop slow down to the speed limit and keep your foot on the gas a Little to where the car is actually quieter than at idol also shift into a higher gear. The next time you get in your car try this it works for me. For some reason cops dont like aftermarket exhausts

ya know.. you'd think exhaust manufactures would put on 'mufflers' that actually MUFFLED sound like they are supposed to..

anyway, you could put in a nice large 'cherry bomb' style glasspack somewhere before the muffler. that'll help alot, and probably make it sound better.

heh heh....I ahd a greddy SP, but it was too loud for me, not the cops. Get a GST muffler, it's better than stock and growls only a little

Yep, take out the cat and things get really loud. I replaced the puny little silencer with a big one. It makes it less deafening, and takes the raspyness out of it.

funny. i dont have probs with getting pulled over for my loud muffler. oh well.. yeah either just get another muffler or try and stay off the gass when passin the po po.. i guess cops these days have little to nothing to do sometimes to pull people over for such stupid things.

Yea, that is exactly what i do when passing cops. I got pulled over cause i was "on it" so to speak :). But, the cherrybomb glasspack is a good idea...where and how much? Thanx.

my car is realllly loud, but i just do what they do above around cops... just feather the gas and/or shift a gear .. and wait till they are out of sound range... if a cop hears you lay into it, he's not gonna be a happy camper when he pulls you over.

I usually jus wait till there is alot of traffic between us or till i am around a corner. They don't really know who it was ;)

i wonder if cops ever pull over those old ass beaters you see with loud ass exhaust. Or those big ass 4x4 exahusts with the quad exhuast that are loud as fuck. Or is it just us?

yeah, very easy to find at any good autoparts store. and it should quiet it a bit.. and make it sound better.

Yeah, I got mine at Napa. After I took out the cat it sounded like a god damn rice burner. The glasspack made it sound much better.

you can get a silencer haha but it'll rob your power.

I got 3 inch downpipe back exhuast with high flow cat and 18x3 resonator and it's not too loud. Either that or I just got used to it. Get a better stereo system so you can can't hear the exhuast also haha. Remember when you drive at night your car sounds louder because all sounds are amplified at night. I got pulled over by a cop on the freeway cuz it was loud at night.

could i install the glasspack myself? I installed my entire exhaust system by myself...

You could do the glasspack yourself with the correct fittings or welding.

I for one hate the glasspacks. They dont just quiet the car, they SILENCE IT. I have a loud muffler and put a cherry bomb on and I couldnt hear a damn thing. ALSO, huge notice in HP drop. Car really lags. Hate glasspacks

then you did something wrong or got the wrong glasspack.. a 'cherry bomb' brand glasspack will NOT make you lose HP, it's a fully straight through design with no restrictions and I've done several of them, they don't quite the car much, they more tone down the raspiness and make it deeper, as I'm sure several people on here will back me up. perhaps you put in a glasspack MUFFLER, not a glasspack straight through RESONATOR. big difference, most mufflers are packed with glass, so it could have very well been mistaken and that could have been the cause for your problem.

I'll back you up. A glasspack won't do dick for performance. The ONLY thing it effects is sound. I had the stock 12" resonator in there to begin with, and it sounded like a friggin swarm of honey bees wherever I was. I cut that POS out and put int a 31" resonator(probably 2" tooo big) and it sounds sweet now. Absolutely no difference in perforamance one way or the other.

look @ Jegs or Summitt for a race only muffler, you can get round canister ones similar to a apexi n1 for around 90 bucks... or cheaper, depending the style you want. I am gonna let go of some unemployment money and order one in a few days ;-)... 4'' inlet, 4'' outlet, stainless, 89 bucks... cant beat it. straight through design... no loss of power, but they cut the db's down... it's still gonna be loud, but not nearly as bad.

I got the cherry bomb glasspack at checkers, with the holes inside and crap like that. Thats the one that slowed me down. It was basically like a resonator.
