Being at work and toying with idea in my head. Can anyone explain exactly how the IAC sensor works? What does it measure, more how does it measure it, etc... Thanks.

It doesn't measure anything. The IAC is the Idle Air Control motor. It is a stepper motor that pulls a plunger in and out of a throttle bypass air passage. When it "opens" it lets air bypass the throttle plate. When it "closes" it stops air from bypassing the throttle plate. Because it is a stepper motor, it can rest in various positions (not just open and closed). I explain alot of sensors/actuators here:

LOL... It's something I could probably use your help with anyway.

A quad TB set up using the stock intake manifold, lower plenum. fitting an adapter plate that goes from round to rectangular, with vacuum taps in each runner, to mount vacuum rail or box to run accessories and mount MAP sensor. Then being able to mount 4 stock 46mm TBs to it. and make a custom backet for fuel injector rail mount and throttle linkage.

Logistical problems I can think of:
-Connecting the butterflies = custom rod through all? Some other way to link them???
-Making all the Idle Speed Motors work together, and getting good idle... (the biggest problem I see so far)
-Possibly spacing or packaging problems running out of space. need to do some measuring here.

Do you still have those measurements or your autocadd file for the spacer? If so would you mind at all if I borrowed that as a base?

Once I get my exhaust done to help the cams breath, I think this is probably going to be the next plan... Especially if I can get a design I like on paper.

cool. I'll give my 2 cents.

You can probably get away with connecting the butterfly rods. Only one will need a throttle cable and spring hooked to it. With the rest you could cut the cable linkage side and custom make some connecting rods to fit one's TPS actuator(screwdriver blade looking end of the butterfly rod) to the next one's cut cable linkage side. Then just cap it off at the end with one TPS.

I would steer clear of individual idle control motors. Consider this scenario. What happens if one were to fail while opened wide. If you use a shared MAP then it could create a super lean condition on that one cylinder because one open idle port isn't going to change the MAP voltage too much. I don't know, I would just hate admiting that i melted a piston because of a stupid idle control motor. My suggestion would be to block all of the idle ports, hook up one IAC so that the computer doesn't throw CEL. Then use ye olde tried and true butterfly actuation for idle control. You may be able to use one of the stock IACs for that...you could even have a little idle trim knob in the cab.

I, personally, would not use an IAC in a stock sense at all - i would use a "direct port" type setup using metal vaccuum lines to create an engine-wide vaccuum "bank" that you could use a stepper type motor with (perhaps a modified stock IAC) to meter idle airflow. a quad throttle setup will only make real power with a standalone, so controlling any of a plethora of idle air setups should be easy, aside from the actual fabrication of an idle air setup in a quad throttle application.

In the end I would like a TEC-III and Hilborn throttle bodies, but that is a very expensive set up. I am thinking intermediate step and them others in the middle. I little rearangment of mod order.

Oh, good call Dino. Didn't really think of that. An engine wide vacuum bank on the idle ports could make for a more even and potentially quicker idle response. It's alot more plumbing, but I think your right - thats sounds like a better way to go.

You're not getting a standalone right now? I'm not sure, but you may be able to get away with using a single stock IAC in this kind of setup. If not enough airflow in "the idle bank" becomes an issue, you could ream the inlet to handle the tip from a Jeep IAC motor. The Jeep tip is bigger and it slips right onto our IAC.

What I'm not sure of is exactly how the stock computer actuates the IAC motor. If the computer adjusts the step based on idle speed I think it could work(example: with a cold engine it wants to find 1300rpm until it warms up a bit, then it hunts for 1200, and so on). However, if the computer is merely putting the thing on a particular step because of everything else that trying to control the idle(Engine temp, etc.), then I don't think it would work at all(example:with a cold engine put it on step 10, then when it warms up a bit put it on step 8, and so on). I've been developing software for a long time, but I've never seen the code on this one. Personally, I THINK the computer actuates it based on idle speed. Thats why i THINK you can control the idle bank for a quad setup using the stock IAC. I may be wrong. Can someone shed some light on IAC actuation? The step is based on idle speed, right?

itis based on engine RPM at 0% throttle position, whih variable inputs from ECT, IAT, and EGR function.

I already had plans for a vacuum rail or box. It's the only way to get a good MAP signal, and to run vacuum based acessories. Hadn't thought about slapping the IAC in there. Still debating a vacuum rail, right on the manifold, or vacuum hoses and a separate box. Guess it will all depend on packaging.
