33734, Tranny ticking Posted by jamesman, Sep-27-02 01:59 AM
okay i put the SM stage 4 in the other day. i just pulled the tranny and then put the new clutch in and changed the output seals on the transmission. i refilled the tranny and then put it all back together. the tranny itself never came apart. Now i am getting this ticking, or rattling from inside my tranny. I used my mechanics stethascope and put it on the bell housing and it wasn't coming from there, i also put it on my clutch actuating fork and no sound, but then i put it on my tranny case and i can hear it really good it sounds like the gears inside are rattling or something. this is if i have the car in neutral and the clutch engaged. any other time and there is no noise. what the heck is it! thanks james

I've been wondering the same exact thing. I changed my clutch the exact same way you did about 1000 miles ago, and i get that same noise in N. Lately it has been getting better and I don't hear it near as much, but I am baffled as to what the noise is. I also put a stethescope to it and it is definately coming from the tranny case and not the bellhousing. Everything else seems perfectly normal though... shifts fine, sounds good in gear... Like I said though, it does seem to be going away with time.

I have the same noise. I had it before the new clutch went in but not nearly as loud as it is now.

...Its usually a loose or bad roller bearing nera one of the gears.....mine only quietly rattled in idle and then 1st and sometimes 2nd...never in any other gear...could also be throwout bearing...I never fixed it cuz it too much $ and or work....plus its not harmful anywayz

My car does the exact same thing your cars are doing. I think it has something to do with the CM 4, a lot of people have this noise with this clutch.....

I get the same thing and I have an original stock clutch. Only 56,000 miles on the car. It will rattle while in neutral at idle and in any gear at low rpm's (idle to 2000). My car is a little more unusual cause if I turn on the AC, the rattling gets twice as loud. You can turn on and off the AC all day long and listen to the difference. Sometimes on the highway at 70 to 80 in 5th gear the tranny will just rattle away while cruising at 3500 rpm. Whenever you hear the rattling, you can push the clut

I have noticed something about this noise. When I start the car up in the morning it doesnt do the noise at all. But any other time it is there. Its kinda embarassing when people think your engine is knocking like crazy when its idleing.

I get the same thing.
I am going to look more into it on Thursday or Friday to try and pin-point it.

brian, you figure anything out on this noise? i was lookin into it also and found that the noise is definitely coming from inside of the tranny. did anyone weigh the stock clutch versus the CM stage 4? the ticking started after i put the CM stage 4 in, and the only thing i did was replace the outdrive seals. i didn't crack the tranny open. i really don't want to take that shit apart again. i was thinking? brian, how did you put your clutch in. did you slide the clutch on the shaft and then bolt it uyp to the engine, or did you bolt it up to the engine and then slide the tranny over it? i did it the slide it on the shaft way first, and what i found was that i had a problem getting the clutch to sit flat on the drive plate while bolting them together, i think it was not centering on the little spacer in the middle, i eventually got it to sit on there, but i'm not 100% sure that it sat correctly. it may be this, possibly, this would be easy to check and i may check it next weekend and see if there is a problem. lates james
