33681, Opinions please! How feasible is it to make a NA 250HP 420A?? Posted by DSBLK93GT, Sep-26-02 08:17 AM
A friend of mine has a 96 or 97 Eclipse with a header,Iceman, and muffler so far. He doesn't want to copy Strauss..so wants to go all motor. He wants to get 250HP (flywheel) out of it. How much would this cost? He is willing to spend quite a bit...but has budget of $10,000 for all mods including body kit. Already has rims, suspension, seats, system, etc. Tell me what you think and any sites I can find more info for him. He said he would also run N2O on it. His friend that I don't know told him he can get 250HP out of it and alos run 150HP N2O kit. Got me. Let me know!!!;)

I asked a similar question several months ago... You could *probably* do it with $10,000. You would probably have to run a 2.4 L Swap with 12.5:1 Forged pistons, custom made titanium rods for weight savings, Some radical cams and dual valve springs/titanium retainers, Tec3 or some other standalone engine mangaement and maybe have RPW custom make a quad throtlle body setup. Alot of the answers i got were that for that same $10,000 dollars for 250 NA HP, you could have 500+ Turbo HP. Your/his call though.

I think it's possible, He will need to reaaly start spending that cash. High compression, cams, stroker or 2.4L, quad TB, etc, etc. Since body work is soo expensive the $10k may be cuttinf it close.

250hp on motor, huh? Well try this:
*extreme head work with oversized titanium valves *really hi revving valve springs, titanium retainers and clips *hollow core (for weight savings), crazy ass grind cams *try individual throttle bodies (Toda Racing sells them for Hondas if that helps) *better call Shiv Pathak for his Tec3 tuning skills! *12.5:1 cr or higher pistons *titanium rods to save weight for those ultra-high rpms needed for that power *balance the sh*t outta the crank *hopefully the oiling system can keep up
Just food for thought. Titanium valves can cost over $100 each. God only knows what the rods will cost. Chris Rado's TRD Celica rods cost $800 a piece! Hollow core custom grind cams also run around a $1000 for the pair. Good luck, bro.

Paeco will custom make titanium rods for $570.00 per rod for a set of four, 530 for a set of Eight, 500 for set of 12, 490 for set of 16, $480 for sets of 20 or more. Check out paeco.com for more info. Group buy anyone? or how's about HRC comes out with a Stage 6 Turbo Kit? That'd be cool. Or Howell/AFX could use them to build an awesome crate motor when they finally come out with that 3.0L ALuminum Race Block....

u guys shouldn't ahve to go that expensive for 250hp forward motion and phat ridz had billet aluminum rods built for the 2.4litre (also forged pistons that go with it)450gram rods that are holding 700+hp now new rods pistons with it bored out to 2.54litre or possibly sleeve the block for bigger pistons port and polish head extrude hone it new valve springs and solid lash adjusters new cams light flywheel and udp no ac or ps and u should pull 250hp at the crank if u juice it i would assume 350hp is acheivable
all in how u wanna do it if u turbo the 2.4 4-500hp is not that hard to acheive but surely 250hp is , now 250hp streetable hmm that makes things harder =)

Jesus do we have enough titanium shit here guys, I dont think titanium is the answer unless he is gonna run more than 10k rpms. All I can see are a bottom end rebuild with 12.5 compression, the parts used should be a little lighter and weight balanced to a very small degree. A top end kit with full high compression drag cams, or a custom grind with a big valve lift. A full quad TB setup with standalone will help yield a lot of the power from NA applications, with big cams you can see a 70% improvement. A custom intake runner lengths should be used too, optimised for the peak power rpm point, 1mm over valves with a 5 angle valve job and P&P head. Same for the header, using a greddy or such may not help since its tuned for stock rpms. UDP, Lightened flywheel, custom pulley set will help lighten the load on the engine. That should be enough to break into or near the 250hp range, the best place to ask these kind of question would be a neon forum where its been done before cause I havent seen it here unless Ive missed something! Here's a 2.0L 420A that was used in the Stratus Touring car. It made almost 300 HP all motor on 12.2:1 compression.
Not only is 250HP all motor possible, it won't cost $10,000.

you want quad TB, the suzuki gsxr throttle bodies are a perfect DIY quad TB setup, only a little fab is required and the guys over on the neon board have gotten the stock ECU to run these and they go for under 200 bucks on ebay, remove the upper plenum and weld this on to the lower and your all set, then get some nice cams and up the compression and youd be there all for WAY under 10 grand you still could get a haltech and much much more till you hit the 10 g mark

easiest way to do it find a 95-96 status motor swap it in 2.4 420a, add the forward motion aluminum rod bottomend packange run the compression up ported head oversized valves upgraded valve train ported intake manifold possible the gsxr quad tb idea and a nice long tube header made by phat ridez or forward motion,

give those guys a call and talk to darrel at phat ridz or anyone at forward motion and they'll set u up...

Thanks for the replies! Would this be streetable though? He uses it ias his daily driver also...I still think going turbo is best opton as far as power and driveability. BUTY..he wants something different. Keep um coming guys!! The more responses the better! :)

Thats sweet, do you have a link on a write-up or more info, me likey!! On terms of driveability, I cant really tell you since Ive never driven a highly tuned NA car but most people say you lose some low-end in sacrifice for enormous top-end. Careful tuning can help you avoid some of those problems which is why I reccommend making your own intake runners and tuning them for maybe 30 reflections at 4k rpms and 15 reflections at 8k rpms or something like that.

You talking about the Quad TB, if so there was a write up on the neon board but the guy has been updating it for over a week now

Find Steve Kalesia over at Neons.org
He's putting 220hp at the wheels, and drives it daily. Stock bottom end. No quad throttle bodies, no standalone engine management.
2.4 power!
