33642, Camshaft Question?
Posted by Mattcky2k, Sep-26-02 01:15 AM
What is a good brand of camshafts for our cars? and what type would be good for daily driving? just wondering that because i've read some are used for drag racing only and others are just stock aftermarket ones. and what kind of power gains could i get from putting in better cams? TIA

you could go with a higher grind but idle quality will suffer, but for a little increase and for daily driving that is the best one. and hp gain wont be that much maybe up to 10 depending on supporting mods

You may also need to replace your rockers...not sure since the grind is not that aggresive. If so, PT rockers will be just fine.

Crower also makes cams, I have Stage 2 aggressive street, they also have street grind. I would recommend an S-AFC or other fuel management to get the cams to run good. I will be upgrading my lifters and riockers to PT ones soon.

the grind is just the profile of the cam, you can get diff grinds depending on your setup, say your running nitrous, there is a special grind for that which will give more lift/duration and such.
Thats why I recommended the #10 grind, its a true streetable grind, if you use the #18 your car will idle like a V8 but will be faster but you will have driving it everyday

the S-afc modifies your map signal to fool the ECU into either giving less or more fuel.

Grind referrs to a specific cam profile. For example, Crane has that "Street Performance" grind. They also have a "Street grind for Nitrous Engines", "Street grind for Turbo Engines", "Drag Grind", and a "Drag Grind for increased compression". In general, the biggest difference between the various grinds is lift(how far the valves are opened) and duration(how long the valves are opened).

I have gude cams, and they are basically a drag grind. They're very streetable and you get power all the way to the rev limiter. :thumbsup

The S-AFC lets you lean your fuel trim for MO POWAH! Stock, our cars run very rich.
