Hi guys i need help. I have a 1996 GS 420A stock all around (it's leased i'm waiting to buy it out). When i'm driving on the highway regardless of how fast i'm going, my temp guage goes up and down every so many minutes. I've had 2 head gaskets replaced, two separate mechanics checked the block and the heads for me to make sure they weren't warped or cracked. I've replaces fan switches, thermostats, i've flush and filled i don't know how many times. However! when i turn my A/C on it goes back down to normal and stays there! Can anyone think or know what the problem might be?
And when i'm done with this problem i'll throw another at you guys to see if anyone can figure it out!

Water pump....replace it along with the timing belt if you are over 60g's

REally? is it just the waterpump? because i've been racking my brain trying to figure it out. i have a full belt replacement w/ accessory belts & water pump scheduled for the end of the month.

have you made sure that both the fans work and that one comes on when car gets hot and checked to see that when you turn a/c on the one on the pass. side comes on?....i know this sounds stupid, but i was just curious..

also there are some wires that connect to the area where the thermostat goes, that can become corroded and i think this may ahave something to do with over-heating...check those leads and see if they are corroded if so ...clean em' up and see if this helps..

That's where the problem originally started 3 years ago. i had a small leak in my upper rad hose that dripped onto that fan switch and shorted it out i obviously replaced that. both fans operate as normal. i flushed again last night because i had an overflow tank full of rust (where that is coming from i have no clue)and the thermostat works perfectly. judging by the way the water was flowing through it even looked like the pump was working properly too. Even after a full flush on my way towork this morning it was still doing it and i check the antifreeze and it's still clean. but it doesn't mean that the belt isn't loose. The car is going in for a full belt replacement in about a month and my mech. highly suggests replacing the waterpump because it's ALOT cheaper to do at that time because they have it all apart.

that would sound like a bad thermostat, but if it's not that, try replacing the gague before the water pump.

Most moders temp gauges today are actually switches as well, when they reach a certain point they tell the fan to come on. The gauge in our cars probably acts like this and it's alot easier to change a gauge than a water pump!

I was thinking the same thing. i'm just wondering if it's not the guage. This outta be fun finding a guage... i have a hard enough time find brake pads for my car. Believe it or not as many stores that sell that kind of stuff in jersey for some reason the Eclispe is never stocked anywhere! and i hate the dealerships!

Check to se that the fans ar eturning on. The second one comes on with the A/C so, the other may have a problem. Could be radiator related too. Check the fins on the radiator and make sure that they are not bend up and actualy will promote cooling. Could be water pump, but definately replace this when you do the timing belt either way.

make sure the a/c fan and radiator fans are not switched around. if the a/c fan kicks on and cools the car down then that might be the problem. the radiator fan is the one in front of the tranny. next time you run it open the hood with the a/c off and see which fan kicks on.
