Okay, I've been searching for a new clutch for my car. I've just read pjules1976 post earlier, so I want to clarify something a couple things...

1. Is it true that our cars come with modular clutches, and the only way to replace it is with another modular unit? (hence the reason it seems like clutches for are cars are so freakin expensive!)

2. And is it true that the alternative is to find the flywheel for a 1995 neon, so that in the future, we can just purchase neon clutches without the flywheel. And this is a direct bolt-on affair, i.e., a mechanic would be able to throw the set in normally without any special modifications or procedures or parts and doesn't need to have special knowledge of dsm cars? Is this only for the 1995 neon, or will other years work?

1. Yes, our cars have modular clutches which definately drives up the cost.

2. I believe you can use the flywheel off of any neon from 1995-1999. Putting this flywheel on gets you a non-modular setup and you do not have to make any modifications to get it to work. It is a direct bolt on. Also, in the future when you burn out a clutch, you won't have to replace the pressure plate either. The only thing you will have to replace is the clutch disk ($100).

All 95 Neons have a non-modular clutch which has a 16# flywheel.

Some mexico built Neons (mainly R/Ts) have this clutch too.

If you find an R/T with 3 as the first number in the VIN, there's a 75% chance it has the non-mod clutch.

I can try to get a part number next weekend.

Another inexpensive option for a modular clutch is the stock PT Cruiser unit. Holds very well. I paid $208 for mine.

The PT Cruiser modular unit was 6.5lbs lighter than my stock non-mod clutch.
