33504, possible spun bearing.... Posted by All4thaN0okie, Sep-24-02 09:29 AM
yup..my car started making noises today..cant really describe them..but the first thing that came to my mind was a spun bearing.. since the car is a little low on oil (was planning to change tonight).... and my dad said that it sounds like a bearing ..without me even telling him what i thought....
so..how do i make sure that it IS a spun bearing..and what are my options....will i be able to rebuild or will i need a new motor?? also..what are the prices for these options... WHAT WOULD YOU DO?? i need your help...

if it is a spun bearing, if within specs you can get undersized bearings and just grind down the crank.
Michael 99gs HRC Stage 2 Stage 3 process begins anyone got a 420a block thats not spun/head for sale?

The only way to reallly know is to check it out. Here's a link that has several opinions on how to go about checking for main bearing damage. Also int this link, Tommyboy posted a superb explanation of how to replace the bearings w/out pulling the motor.

Yea, you can replace the main and rod bearings without pulling the motor, but sometimes all you need is a little excuse to go ahead and rebuild :7

Well, I spun another rod bearing, so I decided to do the mother of all fixes: a 2.4L swap. So that is what I am doing. I am getting there, not done yet, though. -=B-=

Yes, it sounds like you spun a bearing....However, at this point you should be VERY, VERY careful in what you do. DO NOT drive it anymore or the rod might go through the block...giving you a MUCH bigger problem. In the end this may be for the best, though. More powerful 420A. }>

Drop the oil pan and pull the rod caps, and check for any damage on the spun bearing. If there's any gouging on the crank, it'll need to be machine. Little marks can be polished out with emery cloth. Put it back together and go ;)

i kinda have the same opinion as Matt.... (was always looking for an excuse to rebuild) and i guess now is as good a time as any... since our family has an extra car for me to drive around....
so i guess the question now is...how to rebuild.. how much harder would a 2.4L swap be than a rebuild on my stock 2.0... and what to use... im planning on getting at least a stage 1 turbo ASAP and will probably have around $2000 available for rebuild... although if i dont have to use it all i dont want to .... so..if i could get a rundown of prices and things that would be great.... also..if anyone wants to help in the columbus ohio area..let me know... thanks a lot

The spare block I had suffered a spun bearing and not only was the crankshaft unuseable but the block was as well. It had cracked. The head was fine fortunately. All of this has just set back the rebuild time table a bit.
Anyways, get it checked out quickly, and as meantioned above, I wouldn't do any driving until it's confirmed one way or another.

Depending on the time frame that you are gonna be doing it in, I would be willing to go over there and help you. XtremeRS's folks live in Toledo, so maybe I could talk him into coming with me and bumming a bed at their house hehe. I'm in school right now though, so the best i would be able to do till mid december will be a weekend here and a weekend there... Not exactly sure what the ol' schedule looks like yet ;) I think I met you at the toledo meet that Matt (XtremeRS) organized. There were only a few ppl there, but I think I remember you being there. I was driving my brother's silver GSX at the time.

I could probably help you a couple fridays or sundays. I don't know how to actually put the motor together but I can get it in and out.

yea..i did meet you at the toledo meet .. and i dont know what my time frame is like right now either... but im not in a hurry... i have another car to drive and i just want to do this right the first time so that i wont need to do this again... (unless the 3.0 block comes out :) ) so i wouldnt mind taking my time.. hopefully i can get a couple guys from columbus (maybe 99GS) but i havent talked to anyone yet..
.. i think i caught it early (it only started making noises on the ride home tuesday and hasn't been driven since... so hopefully most of the engine is still good...
and im still looking for rebuild ideas.. aka what kinda pistons 2.4 or 2.0 all that good stuff cuz..i really dont know much about them...(yet)
thanks a lot guys
