33433, URGENT: need help with belts!!! Posted by BoostedGS, Sep-21-02 04:43 PM
Okay, I was racing tonight and right after a 1/4 mile run, I tried to turn around and discovered that my power steering belt had slipped off.
So my question is, what else does this belt drive? Water pump? Oil pump? Can I drive it home, or will I risk damaging something??
And if possible, can someone give me the part # for the power steering belt?
TIA
Patrick

PS and a/c bro, so yeah you can drive it home. I don't have the part number off-hand, I have a UDP so its different anyhow.

I've lost so many belts racing...Its been my alternator belt the last few times... Drop first gear hard into second then finish the race, a minute later the damn battery light comes on. It also brings up a question because our belts only run alternator, A/C, and Powersteering. So wheres the waterpump? I dont really care...just wounder.

water pump is located, or ran off of the timing belt....
power steering and air conditioning (if u got it) are run off the same belt....
i havent ran mine for the past week, and shes still a champ....

Thanks for the quick responses guys! I went and got my baby and drove her home last night. I'm gonna pick up another belt today, inspect the tensioner pulley to make sure it's not bent or loose or anything, then put the new belt on.
Incidentally, even with the belt popping off, I still won the race against the AWD turbo Talon! :thumbsup

If everything is perfectly lined up on the belt path, you should never throw a belt. I have the UDP, and i have raced my car hard, put it to almost 7200 rpm's at the track, and NEVER have thrown a belt. Check to be sure everything in that belt path is properly in line, esp the crank pulley if you have a UDP, and some have had probs with the P/S pump pulley not being lined up right..

Mine is perfectly lined up...had it professionally checked twice by two different shops, my dads shop and the mitsubishi dealer. Both said it was ok and in perfect linement. I still toss belts like nothing. I think its just the torque of the engine is shifting it alittle, causing the belts linement to get off alittle. Yet even if they are in perfect linement you can throw them. I guess you are a lucky man Xtrene. I've put like 80 dollars in belts on already this past year. Not too mention that damn dealer costing me to tell me ...."umm...Its perfect."
PS. never buy your belts from the mitsu. dealer... Jeeze-o-petes its expensive.
