33339, Putting in clutch tomorrow, any pointers Posted by jamesman, Sep-20-02 02:39 AM
Okay tomorrow i am going to put in my CM stage 4 in. is there anything i need to know over the basic stuff. i'm gonna unbolt the clutch from the drive plate first. this seems more logical and from my assumptions the tranny should just drop down if i do this instead of sliding off the shaft. also while the tranny is out I am thinking i may remove the diff to weld the pin. if i do this what sealant do i need to re seal it. and if i do this is there anything i need to know. can i just take the bell housing off and pull the diff out and then weld the pin and then put it all back togeter with ease. i was reading armonds page and he was talking about some string and cardboard thing. which i didn't get because i couldn't see it in my head. i got like over 50000 miles on my tranny. i rarely ever wheelspin, and i don't ever plan on going to a track. so do you even think it is necessary for me to weld this pin? I'm boosting ~14 15 on 8.8:1 pistons with a HRC stage II kit. thanks James

You don't have to weld the pin, that's completely optional. I would drop a phantom grip in there, then get some diff pin retainer plates from the dealer (see http://neons.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43858)
A Phantom grip works. Much better than you think it would. And with having a turbo, you should definately have one. www.modernperformance.com and www.howellautomotive.com carry them.
As for sealing the case back together, you MUST use Anerobic sealer, such as Hondabond (from the Honda dealer) or Permatex Anerobic sealer. DO NOT USE RTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck! You'll want a helper or tranny jack, it's not easy to do by yourself.

Yeah I got a pointer... Get hundreds of bug bombs and set them off all around where you live....like your whole county. That way you will kill all the grasshoppers so they wont hit your front bumper and create this big yellow splatter. IT PISSES ME OFF!!!

i would weld the pin. It will only take an hour max getting the tranny apart and welding the pin and putting it back together.
and i unbolted the clutch from the flexplate and slid the tranny off that way. And did the same for putting it on (put the clutch on the input shaft and bolted 1 or two bolts to hold the tranny on and then botled the clutch on).
you ahve any questions then IM me.

I did the same thing, but it will make your life a lot easier if you mark both the flexplate and the flywheel so that you can see where they line up at when you put it all back in. Otherwise, its a big pain to figure out when the tranny is back on.

Yeah i second that. Take off the flexplate from the motor, then line that up with the whole clutch assembly. Then make some marks on them so you know how it goes on, because the 4 flexplate to clutch bolt holes only line up one way, so if you mark it, you can easily line the pieces up when you put the tranny back in, and you get ready to bolt up the clutch assembly to the flexplate.

Do NOT weld the pin! rpm97talon (mike #2 , maroon talon with toyota supra custom turbo setup) had his tranny FUCKED up and all his syncros messed up. Ask Dino (Dark0ne) for more details on that. I'm kinda vague about it, but I know that you should NOT weld it.

What are you talking about? Dino's pin is welded and he's putting down 300... P.S. Go to NAPA and tell them you need Anerobic Gasket Maker, its expensive, but thats what you need to seal the tranny up, its red, or it is at napa atleast.
