3291, Pressure Plate Values... Clutchmaster IV ONLY 1700lbs??
Posted by RS_Guy, Jun-13-01 08:30 AM
After messing with my friend's 3000GT VR4 clutch (super HARD), it got me thinking about my own Clutchmaster Stage IV.

So... I called Clutchmasters and asked... the reply: "Stage IV for the non-turbo mitsubishi eclipse is 1700lbs"

1700???????? What the????? Only??

Is that enough? Any takes on this people?

Hmmm... Sounds pretty low. Most likely more good enough fo rthos eof us staying NA, but for you guys with the turbo I would think something around 2100lbs minimum especially pushing boost...

The stock PP for our cars is only 1000lbs. 1700 is a dramatic increase. The stage 3 is 1350lbs and has been plenty enough for the last 54k miles and over 200 drag passes on my car.

I would agree that if you're going to get boost over 10psi, you should think about the modular setup and get an ACT2100. What does HRC use on their 11 second Eclipse?

Sounds like CM's front-guy might be mixed up. 1700lbs sounds like something stock should be. When I was asking CM about the conv. kit, they said eliminating the modular set-up yields a 2/3" thicker pressure plate. Meaning more pressure in general ......All I know is the last clutch i had which was a 6-puck couldn't hold 18lbs of boost and was rated to 230hp. Now since I've installed the CM stage IV conversion kit, regular flywheel, its been holding the power awesome! And since break-in I've been running it pretty harsh. I was told it holds upto 400-some HP when I ordered it, which is comparible to the ACT2300 right?....whatever pressure plate the CM is, it holds the high boost

Patrick: Glad to hear that man... I am *hoping* that the guy who told me that was not mixed up (even thought I re-asked him the question several times). Anyway, it's too late, I have the clutch and I will find out someday (don't ask...getting screwed right now)!

Glad to hear it worked out. I will call again tomorrow, and hope that someone else talks to me :-) I mean it's just a curiosity issue!

No I dont think the man was mixed up. Sounds stock is right but half the clutches on the market for our car uses stock pressure plates. Thats what many neon owners have been bitching about for yrs. CNNP claims to have developed the 1rst performance clutch that didn't use the factory pressure plate. I think CM may have made some alterations to their new nonmodular set up but I bet the guy was right on about the modular pressure plate. I had a stage III and it felt just like stock (held the power though). Only difference between the two are the lining of the disc. Many clutch manufacteres like to use disc material to increase holding power instead of pressure so they can claim "near stock like feel" or what ever. What I want to know is if the CM stage IV non modular clutch is available without their flywheel. I'm already non modular and dont want to buy another flywheel.

Stan, what have you had for flywheels? Are you running the Fidanza? I think it was you and did you use the Neon Fidanza? I don't know if everything is the same or not but Fidanza now has a rebuildable modular style flywheel that weighs only 5lbs. I wonder which is lighter the 7lb non modular style or the 5lb modular with the flexplate.

Just trying to remember what you ran Stan. I want a lightened flywheel when I do my clutch and I'm trying to figur eout which way to go.

I had the Findanza for a day but was having clearance/engagement problems with it and the centerforce so I took it out the same day. I have a neon flywheel and CF clutch now. Well the Findanza modular may be 2lbs lighter but you have to mount it to the flexplate which must way at least that (I can weigh mine if you really wanna know but I'm sure is more than 2lbs). So might as well get the regular nonmodular flyweel that mounts directly to the crank.

Hmm.. I don't remember asking the dude if those were the values for the non-modular... because that is the setup that I got from them. I got the non-modular setup with the aluminum flywheel. They claim it is 9lbs, but I weighed it in at 8lbs.

Keep your fingers crossed people! Maybe this century I'll get all my car parts back so that I can once more have a complete engine!

OK Re-Confirmed

Modular Clutchmasters Stage 1 through 4 = 1700lbs
NON-Modular Clutchmasters Stage 1 through 4 = 1800lbs

They claim that the material used for Stage 4 CLUTCH is good beyond 450hp..

He didn't really answer me when I asked why the same pressure plate for all stages....

I mean, sure the clutch holds the power, but if the pressure plate can't hold it from slipping then that's bad right? Or have I understood this all wrong?

Someone enlighten me!

Well. Two things contribute to holding ability. Clamping force applied to clutch plate pushing to two together. And the friction between the clutch disc and the flywheel. If the material causes more friction and can grip better and it shouldn't slip. I think I would prefer a clutch that did both, raise the clamping force and use a better friction material... who knows

Yeah most clutch makers prefer to use higher coefficeint disc material than much higher pressure plate pressure. If it holds it holds regardless of which technique is used. High pressure plate values are hard on the foot and engine bearings. The more aggressive the disc material the less pressure is needed from the pressure plate to hold the same power.
