how difficult is it to swap a talon tsi motor in a 2gnt? i have been offered a 97 tsi motor with 60,000 miles, all i have to do is haul it away. it includes the motor, 5 speed tranny, and ecu. what else would i need? is it worth my time and money?

Q: Can I install a GS-T engine in my NT?
A: Yes, but it is an extremely difficult and very expensive operation. It would be necessary to change the motor mounts, install a GS-T tranny, and finally change the whole wiring harness and ECU. It would be better to sell the car and just buy a GS-T. Here is a breakdown of the components and approximate costs:
1. 4G63 turbo engine (stock) $1500
2. transmission (stock GS-T FWD) $500
3. wiring harness for engine $300
4. 4G63 ECU (stock) $300
5. shift linkage $200
6. custom engine mounts $200
7. chassis cross member $100
8. complete exhaust $200
9. intercooler, turbo, related parts $500
10. boost gauge/fuel filter, etc $300
11. Installation $1500
This totals $5600, and doesn't include unforeseen obstacles in the installation. For about $2000, you should be able to get over 100 hp out of the stock 420A motor with porting, valvetrain and electronics modifications.

Man don't listen to these guys.... you can swap those motors in about 15 minutes, and that is without air tools. Jeez guys, give him a break :rolleyes

Took me 20 minutes but that is because I forgot nothing is the same.

I heard someone doing it in Cali for like $1000 labor + parts but I havn't seen 1 person do it. The only person I heard do it apparently caught fire and had mucho problemas.

if you get a free motor and have time, knowledge, money and your engine is bad try it and prove everyone wrong if you have to take it to a shop i don't think is good idea

with all that time and knowledge u could've just put on a stage 2 kit and be faster. might be wise to rebuild tho

The basic problem is that motor is a Mitsubishi motor and you have a Dodge motor in your car. It's like putting a Ford engine in a Chevy, or a Chevy engine in a bug.

Hey..

You could do it if you want...

Some people used the 4G63 and put in their Hyundai's or Dodge Colt's.

Yup :-D

But 15 or 20 minutes, wow, that's pretty fast if you are serious.

It would take alot of money and effort, but I'll say do it if you can get a good deal on it and if you can do it YOURSELF or know someone who would do it for a good price.

Just my opinion.

32870, RE: motor swap (tsi into 2gnt)
Posted by fasterGS, Sep-17-02 09:08 AM
Of course we weren't serious.....

But the point is that is really isn't worth spending the money to do the swap. Work with what you have. If you have thousands of dollars to blow then sure go for it, but for the same money you would spend on that motor swap you could have more HP out of your 420a.

why not take the motor, u say its free, sell it and use that money for your 420a? just an idea

Half these people are always agianst engine swaps. (they love the 420A alittle too much if you ask me) If you can get the tsi, trans, and ecu. Then it wouldn't cost you thousands to put it in like some people are saying. you would need the wire harness..and some time. If you can do it yourself then you'll be great. One weekend, and your done. If you want it, do it. And, I dont want to sound like I'm knocking turbo.....but why is it when anyone has a question on this forum there is almost always someone (or more) saying "why dont you just buy a stage 2 turbo." Turbo is not an answer for every question......Jeeze, a swap would cost a lot less then a stage two turbo any day. And Metal Jim, your comment about "The basic problem is that motor is a Mitsubishi motor and you have a Dodge motor in your car. It's like putting a Ford engine in a Chevy, or a Chevy engine in a bug." It makes no sence to me. For example a "Dodge" Avenger.....420a engine. "Mitsubihsi" Eclipse......420a eninge.
Lets face it dodge and mitsubishi are owned by the same company (chrysler), so hance the engine is made by the same company so it would be like putting a chrysler engine in a chrysler car. Thats just my thought. No offence and sorry if you think im wrong.

yeah maybe they're the same car, but not only are the ecu wiring harness, and trans different, but the motor mounts are totally different also. you'd have to do a lot of custom fabrication just to get it to mount in right. it's definately not a weekend job. there are really no similarities between the tow cars as far as the engine and drive train are concerned...it'll be as hard as it would to put any other 2L engine from any car in yours...no easier really, maybe a little, but not enough to justify that route imo.

the swap would cost less than a stage 2 kit? then why doesnt everyone on here with a stage 2 have a 4g63 instead? ur crazy if u think u can do it in one weekend. at least one person has done it before and spent like 6-10k, and for what, stock gs-t performance? fuck that. not to mention the fucker caught on fire. Metal Jim was right, the 4g63 IS a mitsu motor and has been since the 80s, even before chrysler and mitsu merged. 4g63 says mitsu all over it=mitsu engine, 420a says chrysler all over it=chrysler engine

hes got the engine hes got the trans and hes got the ecu....all he needs is the wire harness and engine mounts......How many engines have you guys swapped in your days... If you know what you are doing and you have everything you need you can do it in a weekend. and yes it would be cheaper then a stage 2 turbo since so far hes got everything for FREE. The wire harness well cost you around 300 and the mounts 200...look at that, 500 dollars other then that you are looking at another 500-700 on parts. so tell me....where exactly can you get a stage 2 turbo for less then $1200. Personally Ive totalled a 96 eclise GS-T, my friend while racing blew up his eninge in his 98 Neon RT. since I had a totalled car in one of my garages and he needed a engine I let him have it. In one weekend we put it in his car with the tranny and everything. It took some custom work but with a little thought and know how it went smooth. It cost him $1500. So in response to fauchpj, How about that.....can you get a Stage 2 turbo for less then $1500?.....none that I know of.

Also for the record I would like to say that I wouldn't put the tsi engine in if your engine you have now is ok. I would have to agree that the cost to swap isnt worth it if your engine is fine. But I am assuming that you want to do this swap for a reason, like your engine is blown or older then dirt. If your 420a enigne is a good engine then I would agree and say save the estimated $1500 it would cost and build up your 420a. But still im not agreeing about the engine swap costing more then a stage 2 turbo, when you get the engine, tran, and ecu for free.

ok if u read the entire thread u would have seen this

"3. wiring harness for engine $300
4. 4G63 ECU (stock) $300
5. shift linkage $200
6. custom engine mounts $200
7. chassis cross member $100
8. complete exhaust $200
9. intercooler, turbo, related parts $500
10. boost gauge/fuel filter, etc $300

This totals $5600, and doesn't include unforeseen obstacles in the installation. For about $2000, you should be able to get over 100 hp out of the stock 420A motor with porting, valvetrain and electronics modifications."

now not counting the cost of the engine and tranny, thats 3600 right there. and keep in mind, not everyone can just get it for free.

Actually, I do kinda agree with him..
Honda boys are swapping in motors left and right..
And not just bolt-ins..
Many people swap in Prelude 2.2L motors in the CRX's place...

Nothing is bolt-in, you need new tranny, motor, ecu, axles, basically everything, and many people do it. A bolt-in to them is just like a mod like a turbo or exhaust or whatever...

Just saying, Honda-ers do it, why don't we go into the engine swapping field? ...

Just saying.

First off have you ever swapped an engine fauchpj? And if you would read you would see that he already has an ECU so go ahead and take that one off your list. While your at it you can take the exhaust off your list. All you have to do is hook up the one thats on the car... Sure this may take some modification with piping and what not...But that sure is not going to cost you 200...mabey $20 for the pipe bending, but for humor we well leave it on. Also you can take off that intercool and turbo related parts, in all likliness everything needed comes with the free engine. and really, you dont need gauges... and those are somthing you can go to a nice salvage yard and find. so we well put $50 down for that. and look at installation.....have I ever said take it too a place and have it done....nope. I know when I work on my car I dont charge myself when I'm done. So now we can take off a big $1500. So now look at the list.

1. 4G63 turbo engine (stock) -FREE
2. transmission (stock GS-T FWD) -FREE
3. wiring harness for engine $300
4. 4G63 ECU (stock) -Free
5. shift linkage $200
6. chassis cross member $100
7. custom engine mounts $200
8. exhaust $200
9. gauges $50
10. chassis cross member $100

So heres your list now and hmmmm....it looks like using my trusty calculator it adds up too $1150 (I said 1200) hmmmmmm..... Oh my gosh... You might want to bust out your calculator fauchpj and double check me, or in reality you might want to go to automotive school and get educated.

A guy out here in Chicago did it, but he regrets it. He spent so much money on doing it, and it never ran right. Either trade in your car and get a 4g63 or else turbo the 420a. Both options will yield good results and cost less than a swap.
32881, RE: motor swap (tsi into 2gnt)

Im not trying to flame at all fauchpj, all I'm saying is that I could do it for around 1200 dollars. I know what it takes because I've done it before. I've worked for my dad who owns a custom shop since I was 15... After 7 years I've pretty much have done everything in the way of customs....This includes engine swaps... In no way is an engine swap a bolt on process. Yet if you know what you are doing it is as easy as one. I have put a 420a engine in a Neon RT and took me 3 days working 12 hour days in the shop. Thats 36 hours. Sure if it was my first one it would of taken a couple weeks but it was well tought out and very well planned. If he's got all the parts he says he has and he carefully looks into how to swap it and know how to do everything...Then it would cost him around 1200 dollars and time....now I'm not saying that I would swap the engines myself... There would have to be somthing wrong with his engine that would justify it.

fauch pj's list:
"3. wiring harness for engine $300
4. 4G63 ECU (stock) $300
5. shift linkage $200
6. custom engine mounts $200
7. chassis cross member $100
8. complete exhaust $200
9. intercooler, turbo, related parts $500
10. boost gauge/fuel filter, etc $300
11. Installation $1500

mograss' list:
1. 4G63 turbo engine (stock) -FREE
2. transmission (stock GS-T FWD) -FREE
3. wiring harness for engine $300
4. 4G63 ECU (stock) -Free
5. shift linkage $200
6. chassis cross member $100
7. custom engine mounts $200
8. exhaust $200
9. gauges $50
10. chassis cross member $100

so fauchpj's list minus the price of ecu = $1700
mograss' list = $1150

Mograss, If your are going to try an argue a point make sure you are correct, it just makes you look like MORE of a dumbass. If you know anything about swapping engines, you know that the swap will NEVER run like stock. also, if you do this the performance will be that of a stock tsi. put 1700 bucks into a stock 420 and it will out-perform a stock gst, then if you decide to sell it you can return it to stock config. The swap dosen't work well and ISN'T easy or else a lot more people would have done it, there. Thats obvious, do you think You have stumbled across something new?, NO. Now accept that your swap technique will be difficult and time consuming and go about your way, DON'T sit here and argue something that has been asked time and time again. I'm Done.

and for you theallpowerfulme ...all i can say is learn how to read because you're making yourself look like a "dumbass". I justified his figures to mine so if would take the time and read instead of being a jackass and trying to flame then you would see. After that I dont know how it would run.... I know that other engine swaps I've done have worked just fine. Maybe this one is special...The point is that you can swap these engines. Its not worth it if your 420a engine is fine but IF YOUR 420A ENGINE HAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT AND YOU HAVE A FREE TSI SITTING AROUND WITH TRANS AND ECU (like ive said over and over) then its possible to engine swap... and I could do it for around $1200. The only real problem with you is you act like you know stuff. I wouldn't suggest auto school for you, like I did FauchPJ, I would suggest grammer school so you can learn how to read what is typed. Maybe you want to go back and look at my figures again and "read" how I got them. Good luck to you though.

i did a 94 420A swap into a 96 ESI i ran into a few problems nothing major but my 96 shell was in decent condition. This project you are thinking about will take time, i did not do a 5 spd swap tho.
