3280, Tranny Fluid Precaution!!!! Everyone read! Posted by Greg, Jun-13-01 08:08 AM
I just wanted to let everyone know that I just had to get my transmission rebuilt do to a spun 2nd gear bearing (The bearing over heated we think cuze of the wrong consistancy in the gear lube). We think it was caused from using the wrong fluid in my transmission! Unfortunately I learned the hard way and wanted to warm you all right away! The Mopar "Factory" fluid is a specially blended fluid DESIGNED for our tranmissions. I was using Mobil 1 75W-90 gear Lube.....Big NO NO!!.....The "Factory" Fluid is Mopar Manual Transaxle Lubricant. Part# is 04874465 and you only need two quarts. It's very spendy but WELL worth it! $14/qt. Here is what the back of the bottle says: "Unique manual transaxle lubricant specifically blended for the NV-T350 transaxle. Maintains shift quality and cold temperature properties. Do not use in other transaxles unless specified in your DaimlerChysler service manual."
P.S. Our Eclipses all have NV-T350 Transaxles (5-Speed 1995-1999)

I use BG Syncroshift which is also designed for FWD transmissions, like ours. Like I'v esaid before 90 Weightt Gear lube is too thick for our trans.

BG Syncoshift must be close to 90W.....and the GS-T Tranny and ours are different trannies and take DIFFERENT Fluid. I know a lot of guys that run BG in there GSX's And GS-T trannys but ours is different. I'm not telling you not to use it but I'm just warning you so you don't have the same problem as me :)

No BG syncroshift is a much lighter weigh lube, more like 5W-30. The AWD guys use the 90W lube in there differentials, but they shouln't be using a heavy gear lube for the transmission either.

3284, I'm sticking to BG... Posted by Skrilla, Jun-13-01 10:44 AM
...until my tranny goes out. So far it is 50,000 miles strong on BG. I'd have to agree with Michael_97RS that the factory gear lube is too thick. This also brings up another thought I believe Murix brought up about us not needing a thin synthetic in our trannies. Personally I think we should use a thin tranny fluid, I don't feel friction is what is required to spin the gears but what lets them actuate in a smoother fashion. The harshness of applying friction on a tranny will lead to premature bearing and syncro wear IMO. Once a gear slides in and is engaged the friction is not necessary so the less the better when selecting a gear. Since the gear cannot move out of place, a synth like BG syncroshift should good tranny operation. I have the symborski metal bushings in my stick, solid metal linkage bushings and the clutch mod. With the BG my tranny became buttery smooth, because with my "new" tranny feel every little bit helps.
