mufflers are packed with steel wool or something right? i hear the inside can burn and wear away...and your exhaust can go from sounding good to sounding like a fartcannon...
what should i look for?

most of them have 'glass' packing.. or glass fibers.. and it will slowly burn away.. or some people even make it burn away quickly for the increased sound.

^^^ i'm not exactly sure.. but I know 'most' of them have fiberglass packing material.. and Hades.. if ya want to get rid of some of that packing, get the exhaust nice and warm by reving it a bunch at a stop after the car is already warmed up.. then shut it off really quick and shoot water up there with the garden hose.. not too much water though and don't actually stick the hose in the pipe. then stop with the water and fire the car back up. hehe.. that is unless by your comment you meant that you can't 'burn' it out cause ya don't have a muffler?? in wich case.. don't do that. hehe.

Well when I first got my car, after the first burnout I ever did my exhaust smelled like shit for about a week. After that it was fine. When Josh (shuwa29) got the new cat back kit for his car, it smelled for a little while. My cat back kit doesn't have a muffler. Hehe.
But yeah, there's something in there that burns out once you take it to full throttle from what I've seen.
