im obviously a newbie...but is there any motor i can swap directly in my NT that will actually make a difference? I was going to buy a gsx, but im really strapped for cash and even tho a swap may cost a bit, im sure it will still be less than 13,000. any feedback, ill appreciate.

Coming from someone that has blown 2 motors in less than a year and also a clutch.....Do not mod your car at all!!!! You will have many headaches and be very pissed off if you do. If you want a fast car get a damn vette. I never thought I would say that but its how I feel right now.

dave is a bit on the up side since something is wrong with his motor again.. if you want to mod your non turbo go ahead but you will run into small/big problems later on.. getting a gsx u can get crankwalk etc.. modin a car, will never be like stock...

Hehe, don't mind Dave, he's kinda pissed ryt now. :P Anyway, from what I've heard, there really aren't any engines out there that are applicable to our cars. Even the GS-T, GSX engines aren't compatible (the 4g63). Not really compatible in a sense, but really expensive and hard to do. Not worth the time and effort. U have to change a lot of parts, ie drivetrain, (i think), even the motor mounts are different.

So basically, ur stuck with the 420A motor, the non-turboed version. Its kinda peppy, not that slow at all, but not that fast either. If u wanna feel a difference, the best thing u cud do first is buy the basic combo of intake/exhaust. Not only will ur car sound good, it will also feel like ur pulling a little harder. (or so u think... :P ). These are kinda cheap, well, depends on where u buy them. U could buy them used, just check the for sale forum or ebay. Other things u cud do are the under drive pulleys, headers, cam gears, bored throttle bodies, etc. These mods are normally if u want to stay NA, which means naturally aspirated. But there is another side to the coin, which is FI or forced induction, also known as the dark side... }>

Most of the ppl here will say to u, either get a turbo kit, a nitrous kit, or both. Turboes are kinda expensive, but definitely worth the money. If u can save at least 3 grand to buy a turbo kit and parts to rebuild ur engine (cuz turboes tend to do havoc on ur engine if its stock), then that's the best thing to do to ur car. Really noticeable difference, hell, a whole lot of a difference. U'll prolly be pushing greater than 200 to the wheels, compared to the puny 113-117 we put out stock. Another alternative is nitrous, u know, the FnF hype. Best bang for the buck.

And that's about it. Sorry if it was kinda long. Anyway, a heads up to u. If u have any questions about these things that I said, just check the appropriate forums and ask away. U cud also surf older posts and see if the question has already been posted. There is also a forum in the lobby titled "things we've seen before" where there are a lot of frequently asked questions that have been answered already, like this question that u've asked. A lot of ppl here get kinda tired and pissed at answering the same questions again and again. So just giving u a lookout :-) Anyway, welcome to the board. The 420a is what you have, without a lot of time and money, you are stuck with it. Remember that this car was not built for high performance so a lot of stuff has to be changed and even when it works right, don't think your set and it will be reliable for forever - it won't. You can dump a ton of money into your car and have a pretty quick car, I know Dino, Armond, and Brad are all pretty fast along with some of the other stage 4+, but even then they haven't broken into 11's. If you want something that is really really fast, get something made to take it. You can find an early 90's 300ZX for under $10K now. Welcome to the board though.

i already did intake and exhaust, but just a muffler and tip, not catback. i planned on doin catback and headers, but with that and under drive pulleys, cam gears, and bored throttle bodies, how much u think ill be pushin? i just got new head gasket set, timing belt, and water pump. thanks again for all your feedback

well.. most will say, me included... if you want the most bang for your buck... get a turbo kit. with your basic stage 2 (if you are manual) will get you into the 14s with the possiblities of 13s with stock internals. granted you will probably run into some problems, but thats what you get when you start modding cars... and on the streets, you are not going to run into many cars that you cannot handle, or at least hang with.... now, take that kit.. rebuild your bottom end, and then you should be into the 13s fairly easy with a pretty reliable car... there is alot of hidden power in our cars... just got to tap into it... but just remember, with more power comes more problems (for cars that were not intended to move that fast).

well when you all say problems...are they like car life threatening? i want speed, but not to the point where its gonna ruin the reliability...

The faster you are and the more HP you are making the more you are going to break things. Go talk to a ferrari owner and ask them how often their car is in the shop.. lol. As far as reliability its a coin toss. Some cars have little or no problems, even after thousands of miles of boosting. Some cars blow up days after boosting them, it really just depends on the car.
