3261, car keeps on dying dont know why Posted by 95dsm, Jun-12-01 07:00 PM
I have a problem and i dont know whats wrong with it, ive been to two different shops. My car shuts off when i am on a red light or when i just leave it on and it doesn't start sometimes for 30 seconds and it dies sometimes when i am in the freeway and im already in gear and it just shots off out of nowhere and am getting a lil tired of it, because now it doesnt start for a very long time today it didn't start for thirty minutes after it died. I've noticed that if i rev it at high rmp it doesnt die most of the time.
The mechanic checked my gas, electrical and starter and they said everything was fine so if you guys have any ideas i would appreciate if not its all good.

Could be your ECU, could be a fuel pump relay, could be a host of different sensor. Do you get any trouble codes.

I had a similar problem and my MAP sensor was shorting out, but yeah... see if you have any codes.

well yesterday my check engine light turned on and then it died on me while I was revving and I waited for about 2 minutes and it turned on and the light went off. It's weird because my car cranks but doesn't start after it dies or when I just turned it on for the first time it takes about 3-5 seconds to start.
Well I took my car to mitsubishi today to fix it and because we have a recall so hopefully they can fix it.

Even if your CEL isn't on, you should still be able to read the codes... here's how:

Mine did something similar to that, coming to stops and at low RPMs it would stall, and not start sometimes. Just needed some fuel injector cleaner.

Theres a few things-
My problem is solved like this. I had the exact same problem, and it turned out the ECU was bad and THAT was shutting off. WHen you lose the ECU's power, you lose the engine. And everything else stays on. Is this whats happening? Also, when you try to start it up, it wont start up untilthe ECU gets power. Do you notice when you turn it on that the times it will crank but not catch are the times that the check engine test bulb light does not come on? Thats because when you turn the key on the ECU did not turn on, just other lights. And when you crank, nothing catches because your ECU is not on. It won't start until the ECU clicks on with the key, and the check engine light turns on for its 4 second check.
If your ECU is not turning on, then thats yuour problem. If your ECU and check engone light DOES come on but the engine still wont catch, you got another problem.
But mine turned out to be the ECU.
Check to make sure he ECU has power in these times of no engine catching. Youll know by turning the key on as normal but only a few red test lights come on but not the check engine light. It means the ECU is not on.
