Damn POS!!!!

I think I am the first person to cook on of these things. The sad part is that I only have 11,000 miles on it. I had a ton of chatter up high in the speed and rpm. The next thing I know I am going no where at 6000rpm and third gear. It only takes me like 1/2 mile to get it up to 60mph now.

I have no clue why it went out, it's not like it is hard to put in w/ the 4 bolts and all. So I can’t see how anything would have gone wrong w/ the install. The car ran great for 11,000 miles and then out of no where no more grip. I noticed a slip of the clutch up high in the gears (top of 3rd and 4th) as well as speed at higher speed and boost. I thought it was kind of funny that it was slipping. Right after I noticed the slip I then got chatter. Me being me I had to play around w/ it to try and get to do it more so I could try and pinpoint the problem. Soon after I had no more grip.

I am one pissed of person right now! These fuckers aren’t cheap and I don’t want to buy another one just to have it go out in another 10,000 miles.

What would be the life expectancy of the stage 4 at 15-18psi daily and moderate hard driving? I didn't drop the thing at every light but I would say I didn't granny the thing either. Shit I thought this clutch was supposed to be able to take the abuse. But Like I said I didn't really abuse it. I would have to say maybe 3 (at the most) hard 7000rpm drops a week.

Well I guess I learned my lesson w/ this one. They aren’t really all that tough.

Shouldn't there be some manner of warranty on that clutch for you??? See if you can get CM to send you a new one. Worth a shot.

Holy shit dude, 7000 rpm drops? I think thats enough to wear out any clutch...and at 3 per week? I dont know, maybe i'm wrong here, but that is quite a bit of abuse to me...

Don't you just sit there and spin your tires when you dump the clutch at 7k rpm??? Hell, my car will just spin tires if I dump the clutch at 4k. And I can't imagine that you had slicks on it, cuz then you'd be shredding axles!

well i don;t think its toast quite yet, i mean dumping at 7000, are u nuts?..haha..well other than a severe glazing, you could have another prob. the input shaft of the tranny is held in place by a bearing that has a seal on it. that seal keeps in the manual tranny fluid, if perhaps this seal was damaged when u replaced the clutch, a small amount of that oil could contaminate the clutch very easily. you should look into your clutch housing from under your car and see if that is the case. only reason i know this is cause it happened to me and dino. check it out before u try and replace it.

Check your bellhousing for oil. If your rear main or the input shaft seal start to leak, you will lube up your clutch. Happened to me..

The nice thing about ceramic clutches is that once they start to slip, you can usually wear them back in with smooth, easy driving within a few weeks. Check your bellhousing for oil (doesn't even need to be a lot of oil) fix whatever is leaking, barsol your clutch, and baby it around for a while.

Think so... Good thing I have the funds to fix it and any other issue w/ the car!

7000rmp.....if that! I have done it a few times but not all that much. I mean about ~3 times a week for a drop period. 7000 being the max to drop it at. Thinking about it I have only done it 4-5 times EVER at that rpm and that was when I was playing w/ the stutter box settings.

Oh well I guess I know the limit of the clutch is now and know what it can and can't take.

I also think the stutter box launches might have had a roll in it as well. When it is cool out and the car has just gotten to the really give it the gas temp I can build 8psi @ 5300rmp. So letting off at 8psi and 5000 probably also killed it a lot faster.

My point is I thought this clutch could take that kind of abuse at least more than 10-20 hard drops for the entire life of the clutch.

I ordered a new on anyway. (Never hurts to have two of everything I always say) And I am tarring the thing apart today to see what is going on.

Its not suppose to last for an extended period like an organic clutch, they state that in the product information. 11K miles does seem a little premature though. Dropping the clutch doesn't hurt a ceramic puck clutch, slipping it like regular driving around town is what does them in. I have something simular (Spec stage 3 sprungg six puck ceramic) and it doesn't like to be driven gently. Drive it like a race all the time it acts fine. Drive it around town like an old lady it chatters and wants to stall. I'd check the clutch slave cylinder for leaks as well, they've been known to wear the best of clutches and not to uncommon either.

When you install this one just drive with caution for like 1000-2000 miles so the clutch is able to get broken in... other then that it might of been the clutch itself. Ive put a stage 2 from hahn and had it go bad after one night... Had to get a stage 3 which then happened to be less money anyways. Hahn is funny. But good luck with the new one and watch the first couple grands. They are the most important

Metal puck and ceramic clutchs dont really need any break in like organic or kelvar clutches other than enough to ensure its working properly. Assuming both sides are ceramic or metal.

Nah, ceramic material doesnt nned to be broken in for 1000 miles, maby organic clutches, but ceramic doesnt really even need a brake in, maby 100 miles if you feel like it.

Mine is perfectly streetable. i think the only reason JustOne's went is because he abused it, or because it has gotten oil in it.

I will give this one a little less abuse. I really don’t get on it all the time like you guys are think I do. But what Stan said about the granny driving killing it faster makes sense. Where I live the dips and speed bumps are VERY plentiful. I have a kit on my car and have to hit such obstacles at an angle and very slow. I never downshift to slow down and I never hold the clutch in at the lights, I put it in neutral. I really dont think I drive it all that hard but I am going to try and take it easier on this one. But could you blame me if I did drive it hard. You know you would if you were stage 4 and it was your daily driver.

anyway...

I wasn’t getting any slip yesterday out of first through fourth on hard from a stop pulls. But when I was cursing at 35 I would put it into neutral for a few 100 yards then put it into third and try to give it more gas and it would slip a TON. I would do the same thing in 4th but I would get a really bad chatter instead of a slip. The chatter was so bad in 4th my wipers would turn on.

Oh well I can’t do anything about it now except learn from it. I tore the tranny out and I have no oil in the bell housing. Nothing from the tranny side and nothing from the rear main side. I wish I could see the inside w/o drilling out the rivets. The clutch was dry and all the bolts were all very tight.

Hey brian... Is the CM stage 4 that you installed a modular clutch? If not, would you be interested in selling the pressure plate and flywheel?

After 4.5 years of heavy modding of my car I almost have two of everything. It just accumulates and I always change my mind or get new ideas and buy new stuff.

I am going to school right now but I use to promote raves here in Denver w/ a friend of mine and made a TON of money, ~15-20k a month. I wish I still had that kind of money. IRS took a ton away...I guess they think they needed money from me. Bastards! And my friend (ex-friend) split for New York w/ most of our money.

The clutch is a modular unit, sorry.

heh I still go stock clutch an it still grabs kinda slippin now though doesn't have the bite it used to have. Haha this clutch has been everywhere. But drag racing seems to be the biggest killer of clutches from my stand point hehe. I've road raced and autoxed this clutch out and it still grabs not to mention highway battling but that's just shifting and double clutching. If you take your clutch to the strip often it's gonna give if you launch that sucka hehe... But it does seem like there's oil on your clutch so I would check out what Dino is saying. I saw the pix hehe.... :P
